I'm really confused by how many people are expecting to be able install and play when it arrives.
It's standard practice with any game that's server dependant like this.

I don't play many PC games, mainly Xbox 360 and when I get a game early on there, I can always play it straight away. Even server dependent games like TDU 2, I got that a week early and could still play it.

Are these all standard editions that have been arriving or CE's?
I suspect you'll have to wait until you've got some characters made.

Well I have just had an email from amazon saying that they are trying to get more stock in due to higher than expected demand and will get it out when they have stock.
Looks like my hopes were misplaced, they have said they understand if I want to cancel my order, however it will probably be too much hassle for that so will probably just push for refunded postage.

Because developers have no control over the platform and can't block people from installing because of MS's rules, and they need to support people that don't ever connect their Xboxs to the Internet.
This is pretty standard for AAA games on PC now, devs can encrypt games and have them locked until release. I wouldn't expect to be able to play a Steamworks game early.

Damn Amazon still haven't dispatched, but Tesco orders already arrived?! Going to be gutted if mine doesn't arrive on Tuesday. I will download the game using the pre-installer then I will just have to activate the game with my code from the box when it arrives and I can play straight away.
Could anyone link me to the latest EU English installer? The one on http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/blog/4410912/ keeps downloading the older version for some reason..
