Audi A3 - Any know issues?

Hi Gents

I have a Mondeo 04 Titanium-x which has developed a clutch issue and EGR valve has gone, was going to chop it in and get an Audi A3 2 door as I had an A4 for 6 years and it never let me down, can only afford 2K or whatever I get for the Mondeo really, are the A3's just as solid or are there any know issues with them?

Which model are you looking at? The turbos on the 2.0 140 tdi are quite well known for dying apparently. My last A3 had its turbo changed at 69k.

Hi mate

Seen a 1.8T but to be fair as long as its in good condition in and out I'm not too fussed, need climate control for the kids and would like a petrol ....

Not much else really, reason I'm draw to Audi is because the A4 was such a lovely reliable car you see

If you can only afford something cheap leave the old Audis alone and get something simple and cheap to fix like a Focus.

To be honest why not just fix your current car?
 
Was going to say its cheaper to fix that mondeo then buy a new car

why not take out AA break down repair cover, then if you break down they come get your car and fix it for you even if it needs a new clutch they pay first £500

Its £12 per month

Being quoted £1 to fix the clutch and valve, looked at the focus and I don't mind them just as I've had an Audi before...

It's down to cost, pay to get Mondeo fixed 1K or flog it privately and pay no more for my next car....

I'm sure you have, but your budget is very small so however much you'd like an Audi its probably prudent to realise that now probably isn't the right time.

It's down to cost, pay to get Mondeo fixed 1K or flog it privately and pay no more for my next car....

his he talking about the new shape A3 or the old shape the 1996 to 2003 one?

if its the older one they are awful and not many clean examples left about

Sorry I'm might be missing something here, how is spending 1k to fix a car better value than selling what I have for £1,000 - £1,500 and using that cash to buy another car? :confused:

I understand it will be an older car but as I'm about to change jobs I have no funds to fix my current one thats my issue :(

Because you are not selling your broken car and going out and buying a superb mint condition or brand new car with no faults, no problems, a cast iron warranty and no possibility of any problems.

You'd be going out and buying another old, used car of questionable history. There is absolutely nothing to stop the clutch going in a months time on whatever new car you buy.

Your budget is at the end of the market where there is lots of junk around, if you chose an Audi, your budget is at the end of the market where its almost ALL junk.

If you fix the Mondeo, you are left with a car with a brand new clutch. You know it wont go again in the time you own it (unless you do 100k miles or something). You know the car. You know whats been done.

If you dont have funds to fix your current car, how do you have funds to buy another car for £1k more than you'd get for your broken car? And if you dont have funds to fix a Mondeo what makes you think a 10-15 year old 7 owner Audi is anything other than a bonkers idea?

I know everyone these days wants to buy a Superdry hoody and drive an Audi with an iphone on the passenger seat but at £2k that really isn't an option. You should focus on the best value choice for your financial situation.

OK I see what your getting at now, better the devil you know I guess, not sure what the Superdry comment was about but there you go?

I'll get some alternative quotes and see where I go from there .....
 
Get yourself some more prices for the work on the mondeo too, I know the clutch is generally a 600 quid job but I'm not seeing where the rest of the 1k comes from? Even look at parts prices yourself and paying somebody to just fit.
 
Hi Guys

Got the clutch checked out today by another garage and they have said there is nothing wrong with the clucth as far as they can see. He quoted £234.44 to replace the EGR valve, now could I purchase the valve and gasket myself and get them to fir it, it's only an hours labour he said, wondering if and where I could source a new one online

EDIT: I can find the valve for £72

Just the one hour for the valve.....

Bit ****** off that the guy said I needed a clutch, I'm by no means a mechanic but thought it strange as I hadn't noticed any issues myself....nevermind

Do garages dislike customers supplying their own parts and just using them purely for labour?
