Need a new NAS box. so far I have narrowed it down to the following 2 units:

NetGear ReadyNAS Duo V2 (2 Bay)

Synology DiskStation DS212j NAS (2-Bay)

there is about a £50 difference between the pair. Not quite sure what I should go for, any and all advice welcome

I just bought the Synology DS212 and i'm really pleased with it so far. It's just that bit quicker than the DS212J and also has USB3 and a SD card reader on the front.

I also own a DS710+ and the DS212 seems to be about on par with it to be honest.

I should have mentioned that I already have a DS212+ that I use for work, but need a separate NAS for personal files.

was looking for a cheap solution. In the end I ordered the 212j from OC.

I think it's best to stick with what I know

How long should the ds212j take to create a Synology Hybrid RAID disk?

I have installed a single 2TB HDD & it has taken almost 2 hours to reach 30%.
Is this normal? I'm sure it did not take this long on my 212+

Could my HDD be faulty?
SMART is showing disk status as NORMAL

from what ive read (im looking to buy a NAS) that sounds normal. Ive heard people talking about 24hrs for a 4bay setup.

Quick question.

Once the SHR volume is up & running, can I add a 2nd HDD without any issues?

will the 2nd HDD be incorparated in the the SHR volume or will I need to create a new volume?

Sorry for the dumb questions. The 212+ i use for work was setup by one of the techs in the office.

I have the DS212J and its fantastic. DSM 4 (update to its operating system) made it even better.

It offers easy setup and iphone/android apps. Head over to the synology website and check out the DSM 4 info and live demo. That will give you a good idea of the user interface and features.

If you have any 212j q's just ask...

hi, can I ask one question here instead of starting a new... just that I want to get a 212j, and want to put x2 2tb hdds, but can only afford one atm. Is it possible to configure the 212j to run in raid1 with just one hdd first, then the second hdd to be added at a later date? cheers

Yes. Power down the enclosure. Insert the new HD and start it back up. It will repair the volume and your done. Bit more of a guide here though

Yes provided the drive you add is of the same size if using classic raid. The second drive would mirror the first so say you set it up with 1tb in classic raid, then added a 2tb drive, you would effectively be wasting 1tb of space as it would only mirror the 1tb drive and waste the other 1 tb. However, if you set it up as SHR you could add a drive larger than the first and still use all the space.

Does that make sense? Again the guide I've linked to will explain it.

Sorry to hear you have had a bad issue with yours. QNap are very good as well. The retailer should be able to replace that for you inside of the first 12 months? Try emailing them perhaps?

If your QNap fails what will you get then? Just to make my point all manufacturers work with a certain percent fault tolerance. I had an Asus graphics card fail on me once, doesnt mean I dont buy asus again. Just means things can and do fail from time to time. Fact of the matter is things can and do fail from time to time.

google "synology blue flashing light", have been buying consumer electronics
since the 1980's and building pc's since the early nineties am very familiar with
tech failure, but when the tech fails within two months and no one at the uk head office
can be bothered to call you back or email you that's not a good sign.

Well I can only speak from experience but when I had a problem with the fan on my DS210j I filled THIS out. Had a reply rel;atively quickly and a new fan sent to me direct from Taiwan. It may be their support is based there, I don't know, so worth sending the online support form if you haven't already.

If you complete the form it creates a paper trail. You have probably already done this though? Also some good info HERE, have you tried this solution? Towards the bottom.
