Hello whats the best way to record games without hurting performance like msi afterburner does. Can you buy PCI PVR cards? or is it best to just go with a PVR?

Do all theses youtubers use software or is it done using hardware?

Thanks

FRAPS :)

I don't think it effects perfomance too much.. Your system should be more than capable.

Thanks not tried that one. I had ago with Alan wake last night and My fps went down to 30 and made game un-playable? Maybe I need to adjust the settings?
I would like to play at 60fps and record at 30fps for youtube.

Has you can probably tell am very new to this :) If it comes down to buying a PVR for the better performance am happy to do so.

Most of them /record a demo of the game play using the inbuilt system, and then use software whilst playing back the demo. Sure, theres a performance loss, but it doesn't matter when you're not playing.

All the other options happen (some games don't have a /record functionality), but the above is how the 'pros' do it.

Other options:-

http://www.xsplit.com/ - This will allow you to stream live, and also record the stream.
Xfire, the chat program, allows you to record, but mostly expects you to upload to their service.
Fraps, as above, but I believe it locks your FPS.

Sorry for this, when you say inbuilt system do you mean like FRAPS? or built into the game... I want to start recording some BF3 and other upcoming games.
But I dont want any performance loss thats why am thinking on hardware like PVR?

I personally use Fraps but it does indeed drain a fair bit of processing power. All recording software will affect performence to some degree.

I use fraps alwell with my 6870 and i find that all my games are still easily playable when recording at 30fps.

it has a free trial version so have a play with it and see if it drains too much.

In a game like call of duty, or counter strike, you can pull down the console, type record and it generates a demo file. The demo file isn't a video file, its just the information needed for your game to renderer the file on playback, you do your recording on playback since generating a demo file requires no effort, whilst recording video does.

Apparently BF3 took a huge step back and doesn't include such functionality, so you'll need to use a different method. This is where your "performance loss" issue comes to a head. You cannot record without some performance loss, but if you have beefy machine, and are not overly bothered about top notch quality, many people are doing it today with. Many 'top players' use xsplit to stream live games, even using Xsplit combined with services such as http://www.own3d.tv/.

You can also get hardware to offload the work, but I can't help you there as I've never done that, and don't know anyone that does.

Just had another go and I noticed in MSI settings FPS limit when recording I had it set to 30 lol.
Just uploading a test now to youtube, i'll post link here could you give it a thumb up or down on the quality?

Thanks :D

Scrap that lol its going to take 700 mins :( that file is over 8gb with only 2mins record wow... need to low the quality I think.

Just convert it to xvid or something afterwards. It will knock the size right down. Or convert it to whatever settings youtube uses. I normally goto xvid first it only takes about 2 mins to go an 800meg recording. Will drop right down to about 15-20meg maybe less.

I use MSI afterburner. I used to use fraps, but it limits your in-game FPS to the same as the recording, and also records in 4GB increments.

You can check out the 1080p quality i've used on videos uploaded to my youtube.

My MSI Afterburner settings are as follows:

The latest video I made, a 20 minute Sniper Elite V2 video, came to 5.9GB when recorded and then 1.62GB when encoded in Handbrake to a youtube compatible format.
