Puppies !!

caged, with pen also.

have they always been caged?

what we found with my first dog was that she liked to sleep in the cage but have a wonder in the morning. so after she got used to the cage being her bed, we just left the door open. this meant when she woke up she would wonder down, check everyone was still there then mosey off back to bed.
but like said, puppies have weak bladders (think its like 3-5 hours) so they might just be desperate when they wake up

Electric shock collar.

Or at least punish them for inappropriate behaviour rather than pander to their every whim.

Reward good behaviour also.

Postscript - I love your writing style.

you have to punish them immediately though. some people will punish a dog for things they did hours ago, they dont understand that as they only relate to the last actions they did. as they get older they get better

I can't recall whether this has been asked / replied but does the barking start at a particular time? There could be something that sets them off - boiler coming on, fridge making a noise, sunrise etc etc. Your best bet might simply be to go back to how you would have dealt with younger puppies.

Its generally around sunrise, once the birds start a tweeting and the wood is starting to rise (if the guys in the audience catch my drift)

I'm sure when I saw something like this on the dog whisperer, when the dog howled at night he got the owner to walk in spray it in the face with water, then leave without saying anything.

It was a husky and it eventually got the message, not saying this is the perfect way to do it, but it seemed to work on the show.

Pretty much always been caged yes.

+1

dogs are pack animals. OP: you and mrs are the pack leaders so they miss you. dogs like everyone being together so they get upset when you arent.

they will grow out of it. its hard to ignore them though. the more you pander to them the more they will do it. once a dog sees correlation between an action and an outcome (howl and get let out) they will keep doing it.

also remember that they dont have strong bladders. they might cry because they need the loo but then when they see you they forget about it as they are excited to see you.

dogs and kids are very easy to get into bad habits with.

Good reply, thank you - yeah they are caged and penned by the back door and I was wondering about a dog flap so they can get in and out. Although the male has special needs, he has a slight problem with his eyesight and has spacial awareness issues - he might get out, but it's getting back in that may confuse him. Still it would be quieter inside with mono instead of stereo howling! :)

2 cages or 1?

Same time every day?

Just a phase their going through, lonely, had same problem with a retriever years ago, every day, same time 4am.:(
Solve it by putting a radio on a timer to come on low volume just before 4am, six months of radio 2, soon cured the dog.

WOW ! Thats precisely what I suggested this morning, see babe, wasnt such a daft idea :)

i would try 2 smaller cages (if its just for sleeping they dont need endless amount of room for walking and a lot of dogs like the comfort of being surrounded) so they are not ontop of eachother. dogs do like their space.

again, background noise can comfort them into thinking people are up and about, but i have found with one of my dogs it made them more anxious as they heard voices but couldnt see anyone.

Typical spaniel then :D

How much light gets to them? Is there anyway of ensuring they have maximum black out during night time hours. Our puppy prison, sorry, crate is next to large windowed barn doors that go out into the garden so we have to use enormous thick curtains to ensure darkness is maintained! He is not generally troubled by birdsong but it drove our previous springer demented so that could also be a factor.

I did wonder this morning about covering the cage or something, in order to provide more darkness in the morning.
