Virgin Media Discussion Thread

anyway if VM kept their speeds to between 5-30Mb or even 5-20Mb they won't have all these issues also the hardware in each area would handle it better....

but VM wants to offer the fastest BB which i can understand because more people likes the idea of having super fast BB.. VM clearly knows in some areas the hardware won't handle the demand but it won't stop them selling it in them areas, it's called business , simple solution is if u can't wait for them to fix/upgrade the hardware in your area leave VM

This is true to an extent, but even when everyone only had 20MB a few years ago, they were not without there problems.

Available bandwidth to customers is only a small fraction of the issues Virgin have.

Further adds to the fact they should not be selling the speeds they offer in congested areas. Their network could be managed so much better.

If VM upgraded their infrastructure to keep up with demand, nobody would have a problem, it's that simple.

Don't sell a product you can't provide.

The only alternative I have to VM is 2mbit ADSL, which I have, as my "gaming" broadband.

it's called business
But the more problems they have, the more they have to deal with customers who can't watch iPlayer/YouTube on their super fast 100Mbit connection. So they have to pay for more customer service operators to deal with increased call volumes and use up engineer time sending someone to a premises. Then when this doesn't fix the issue, they have to deal with either complaints as a result or deal with calls back at step one again. This all means they have to pay staff for the increased demands.

Exactly. And this is why VM are a bad choice of ISP. Screwing of your customers in the name of profits is something all businesses do but VM are taking it to an extreme and as such I personally will not use them in future.

If the power levels are too high it won't sync properly, there is a good thread about the ideal levels on the Virgin forums.

The attenuator is to bring the levels down to ideal values.

It's a cheap and fast shortcut for VM. They tried it on with me but I would not have it.
After a lot of calls I got a repull now I have no problems.

i would agree to that if u live in a bad VM area if u got what i mean

as i said before i've had no really bad issues with VM , only afew slight issues such as power levels/lost of connection, but that got sorted within 2days plus they didn't charge me for the internet for 2 weeks because of the issues i had....

No one is saying that VM aren't good in non congested areas though. As I have said many times in this thread, I received excellent service from VM, both in terms of product and customer care (once I'd dealt with the script monkeys, same is true with many large companies). Slowly though as the years went by, the service degraded and the service became useless in the evenings.

I am sure that if I ever get a fault with BT Infinity then I will have to deal with the same useless muppets in call centers but the product itself is fantastic and I couldn't be happier (well, getting below 10ms ping would be nice!).

I really do hope Virgin sort their network out and I would genuinely consider going back to them if their network is ever fixed and it starts looking like a better contender in terms of price and performance instead of BT.

FWIW, I would go with a FTTC reseller, however their usage limits are too low for my requirments.

Ignore the slight outages on the tbb one my routers being playing up a bit but this is certainly the best i've recorded on my VM line. Also started using fruk.net as an alternative to tbb just for comparison.

Finally got round to doing one of these monitors. Doesn't seem as bad as others. Been performing well for me lately, download speed wise (don't game much online anymore). The tall spikes have been from downloads i think.

VM could increase the available bandwidth so easily in all areas without much work needing to be done. All that would be needed is to upgrade the QAM. However they cant do this because of all the issues they have with ingress and egress. Most of which are caused by the consumer.

Oh I want to move my TV or broadband to another spot so I'll just buy some cheap dodgy satellite cable and **** screw on connectors. Or I think I'll go to B&Q and buy one of these crappy splitters so I can wire all my dodgy boxes up into every room in my house.

What sort of shortcut exactly and what would you propose they did to fix the issue of having high power levels due to being so close to the cabinet?

So I called virgin today to cancel our rolling contract, 2 weeks after they said they are going to have to charge me £24.99 for the engineer visit(in order to connect the superhub and V HD box)!
Guy at the cancellation team was very helpful and said he would take off that £24.99 as well if I stay! I asked him put every thing in notes and said I will call back :D

it appears there is over utilisation in my area. Virgin have given a fault reference and an expected date of fix which is 24/05/2012...

I will wait and see what happens, but, have any of you guys been in this situation and seen any improvements?

Been in this situation since October last year, been given 5 fix dates so far but nothings changed and I don't expect it to, they'll just leave it until the students leave and the congestion goes down, then the problem arises again in september/october and we just go round and round and round and round in circles.
