I'm starting a course in Edinburgh a week on Monday, it's based on Queen Street. I know nothing about Edinburgh, apart from it's rubbish compared to Glasgow. So, are there any really good coffee shops, good places to have lunch (I get an hour a day), any good pubs (for afterwards, obviously!) and that sort of thing near Queen Street?

Cheers.

There's a nice Chinese Buffet not too far away (maybe 10 minute walk) although may be a bit busy or expensive for lunch.

I think it was called Saigon Saigon

George Street is your "yah" lined pub and club street, few restuarants too. I haven't eaten in the city centre for a while now apart from the fast food joints so can't comment.

There's a good way to get recommendations from the locals :p

I had dinner at Karens Unicorn on Abercromby Place (next street over from Queen Street) last time I was there. It was really nice, though probably more suited to an evening meal than for lunch.

Mathers Bar on Broughton street, very good food, great prices. Or, for the cheap beer & reasonable food prices, The Standing Order on George Street - both about a 10 minute walk from Queen Street :)

99 Hannover St for post-course beers. Yes Sushi, also on Hanover Street and Iris, Thistle Street are pretty good for a scran.

Thanks guys, that Kay's bar looks like my sort of place and 99 Hannover seems good for a bit of a blow out. And I love sushi - so will check out the sushi place.

Not really a fan of George Street or Rose Street.

Hah, nothing wrong with a bit of city rivalry!

How does it go now? Rakin' the bucket fur sumfin tae eat, find a deid rat an yi think it's a treat! In yer Glasgow slums!

You couldny afford Edinburgh lad.

:D

Don't know where you'll be on queens st, but when I was doing my celta over there, I relied on a combination of the thistle st sandwich shop, and a newsagent on the corner of frederick st and queens st that gets fresh wraps/rolls/bagettes from Margiottas every day. Which are amazing. End of week drinks, we'd just go to the standing order, as it could accommodate 40 Spaniards along with us, but I always did my drinking in the old town. Though, Bon Vivant, also on thistle st, has a decent selection of interesting foreign beers to drink on a street corner.

Lol its not rubbish compared to Glasgow, they are 2 completely different types of city. FWIW Edi is the more refined, less clubby one.

Loads of nice places on George Street up one street from where you are, and Stockbridge is not too far off either. Best bet is to hook up with some fellow course-mates and go for a wander at lunch, or ask the organiser/trainer for suggestions.

Just out of straight curiosity Al, how are you managing to pay for the course (if you don't mind me asking that is)?
