Edinburgh: Good places for lunch/coffee/snacks/etc.

Lol its not rubbish compared to Glasgow, they are 2 completely different types of city. FWIW Edi is the more refined, less clubby one.

Loads of nice places on George Street up one street from where you are, and Stockbridge is not too far off either. Best bet is to hook up with some fellow course-mates and go for a wander at lunch, or ask the organiser/trainer for suggestions.

Calm down, calm down. I know they are different cities, and both have their good and bad points. It was just a bit of banter, perhaps I should have included a smiley?

He's going to meet me. And come to regret it I reckon! :D

I have visions of you being permanently in a kilt, brandishing a dirk at anyone even resembling an English man in your city! :p

Just out of straight curiosity Al, how are you managing to pay for the course (if you don't mind me asking that is)?

Strange question, but it's being funded through inheritance. Specifically, I sold my late fathers car the other week so using some of that. I'm not aware of any grants and the like, but I didn't actually look. As Bio said, I also have a part time job but that's beer money really. I'm also having a months break from it to do this course.

Was that recently your father passed away?

Sorry Ahleckz I didn't realise, and please ignore the insensative comments above. :o

Pure curiosity. :)

Sorry to hear about your father, I wasn't aware.

I only ask really as post-studies there was no way I could have afforded to begin a new course. I would have needed a fair bit of time out to sort myself out financially.

Was the beginning of January. Don't worry about it, comments don't bother me!

Ah right. It's £1200 or so, should be able to get a job abroad without too many problems though. Money well spent in my eyes, will be able to see some of the World and earn some decent(ish) money whilst doing it.

You'll have to let me know how you get on then Al. I'm still banging my head against the wall trying to work out what the hell I'm going to do with myself! I'm genuinely pleased you're not going down the same path!

What you doing just now? Weren't you at Uni at one point? Law? I seem to have everyone down as law in my head!

I've heard that the course itself is very challenging, but that's not really a problem. Means to an end and all that! I'll let you know how it all turns out. I'm looking to move away ASAP really. Hopefully August/September sort of time.

Because of the inheritance, I'm in a position where I don't have to worry about the money side of it too much. It would be quite tricky to do what I'm planning without some saving up beforehand.

They did to me when my father passed away but I was a sensitive child!! :D

I'm very sorry to hear it all the same.

Cheers sir!

Yea, Nix is a law grad also.

It's quite a walk from Queens Street but if you like hog roast then Oink on Victoria Street (between the Royal Mile and Grassmarket) is the best I've tasted, especially if you have haggis instead of apple sauce!

Depends on which end of George Street, if it is Charlotte Square end you can walk through the Princes Street Gardens, cut through the wall to come out on King's Stable Road and walk around. It saves climbing the Mound, and is really only a 10 or 15 minute walk.

Depends how much time you are afforded for lunch. I like the Grass Market and Bridges area myself.

Hi there

For a cheap pub lunch (and cheap beer) you've got Standing Order in George Street which isn't too far from Queen Street where you're based.

Alternatively you could take a walk along to the Omni Centre which is at the end of Princess Street where you've got a huge choice of places to eat.

Good luck with the course bud. :)

There are some quite nice places near the Castle around Grassmarket Square. Don't go in groups of more than 2-3 people though or you will get refused entry (for pubs after).

Basil Peterson? That's the course I'm doing. :)

Actually I was just around the corner at the Randolph school, but I walked past Basil Patterson almost every day over lunch to try to (at first) stop panicking before teaching or (later) try to cobble together a lesson in an hour.

Good luck, I assume the course is broadly very similar, as there's a fair bit of crossover between the tutors at the schools. I thoroughly enjoyed it, not half as scary as I expected, and really miss the other trainees and my students now. Aww.
