670, 680, 7950 and 7970 overclocks

I'd scratch those results tbh, the small PCB ref 670 they used for that test isn't a fair comparison of what a 670 is capable of. The vast majority of 670 Windforce owners are managing 1300/7200 with ease, passing a stock 680 on the way and not too far away from a clocked 680.

I appreciate that Windforce, Frozr et al can get improved overclocks (I don't see value in those cards for current price differences). However, I am looking at reference cards as a

Palit 670 = £297
HIS 7950 = £288
HIS 7970 = £348

From what I can see 7950 > 670 > 7970 when overclocked with the AMD cards getting Dirt Showdown which I would have bought anyway.

So the decision is straight forward to make as long as the [H]OCP overclocks aren't cherry picked or anything. Just needed clarification on that.

Well that benchmark is not really something to base your opinion on then.
With only reference designs and wanting to overclock it muddies the water even further. None of them are perfect with their stock coolers but the 7900's would have the edge because of people claiming of excessive noise and low quality of the short PCB 670.

As you won't be able to push them that far on stock air, 1200p will not stress them as much and it's locked to 60Hz. I would be inclined to recommend the 7950 as best value for money if you had no way to spend more on the better designs.

The windforce 670 is the only one I would consider of any 670 going by forum comments. But if a 7970 with some solid cooling solution is around the same price it will out perform it. So 7970 is top performance but the 670 windforce is best all round package at this point.

Just looking at the prices and the 670 WF is slightly cheaper than the HIS 7970 reference. So if I was you I would buy the 670 and then look for someone selling the Dirt3 Showdown game code from their AMD purchase.

That way you have the best card in that price range.

Thanks. Am leaning towards it now.

670 WF is on today only offer saving you £28, I ordered mine to save a few quid so if you do go that route I wouldn't wait till 2moro :)

I can order it any time this weekend for a few quid less than that, so will read a bit more and decide.

Would double check that a lot of other sites have it as pre-order only price so you might be waiting a while for them. OCUK one of the few places with actual stock.

Your leaning towards it? I had to force myself not to buy one just now :p

You did better than me I clicked buy XD

Great clock on that 7950, excellent value for money. Ive just bought a 7950 too, and an antec 620 watercooler to strap on it :D

Hoping for 1250+ Mhz core speed :D

7950 was great value for money about a month ago. Today I'm not so sure with the 670 about. If it was slightly cheaper (considering its considerable OC headroom) it would be a no brainer.
