Ok so one of my cats had a bird in the house, we took it off her and have had it in a box for the last hour or so and it has been fine but every time you go to put your hand near it, it opens its mouth.
Now this to me suggests its a chick and wants food from its mum so i'm kinda worried if we let it go that it wont hop off and will just die?
Suggestions?

similar thing happened, apart from it was someone elses husky...
we just put it out side and put some water for it :)

From past experiences, if it was gonna die it would have done so by now. It's just the opening its mouth for food thing that is bothering me. If it was trying to fly off then no problem but I dont want it hopping round the garden just to get caught again and eaten.

It's had some bread wet with water so far...

Why?

It's a bird. You're not killing it, you're not forcing something else to eat it. If it's going to get eaten, it will get eaten. Just get it over with rather than just letting it starve to death!

Can't really help mate but it's not a nice experience.

My cat ran in and dumped a pigeon on the rug at my feet. The thing was still moving and she was growling at it whilst circling it.

My old cat managed to carry a ******* seagull that was about the size of him to our door :|

I'd go looking for worms or something as said.

Because I'd rather prevent it from dying if I can and it's just chowed down some soggy bread :)

This will happen one day, i'm sure of it

If it's wing/wings are broken then you either keep it in a cage for the rest of its life or dispatch it.
If it looks Ok then just feed it as much as you can then stick it in a dark cupboard for the night as they recover quite quick, You'll probably be woken during the night hearing it flap about then you'll just have to shoo it back outside again, This bit is a bit Freaky. :p

Release it where it was found. Best chance of getting back to it's mother/where it belongs?

Would probably feel a bit cold to do so but in your care it'll probably die anyway (unless you're Brooks from the Shawshank Redemption). :)

The other option is to take it to your local vet. They took a bird from us after the cat nabbed it. Told us it would be fine, they may have incinerated it after 6 hrs for all I know but "out of sight out of mind" as they say.

Either put it back where it was found so it's mother can get it (they leave their young in different places while out collecting food) or call the RSPB/local wildlife charity or whatever in your area.

Also it always surprises me these days that people can't tell the difference between a young or adult bird.

Well its clearly a young un as it was opening its mouth to be fed and I found it in my dinning room so not sure how far away the cat got to it. She some how manage to bring an egg in the other day, without breaking it!

we did this when a sparrow flew into our window. the vets we're more than happy to take the bird in. sadly, with a broken wing and concussion there wasnt a lot they could do for him so he was put to sleep, but its better than dying of starvation or dehydration.

Well it seems to be doing fine and we have probably had it in a shoe box for about 1 and 1/2 hours.
Little video of it eating some wet bread...
I would take it to a vet but its safe to assume that any in my area are shut and will be until monday morning
