What to buy 670 or 7970

We're talking about a graphics card here, not a fashion item

Agreed , but with all other deciding aspects being equal , it is a fact that most of us do like things to look Good , awsome , cool ect , It should not be the forefront of your decision making of course .
But as iv read on these threads its something widely acknowleged that some things are off putting .
Put like this today the windforce 670 is on sale , and for me If i was in the market I would not hesitate to get this card beceause the colour is not important, as is the best deal today , However if the forza III with the same price, and spec , performance same after sales service and so on ect, And was on sale today for the same price , I would go for that because simply it looks better in my open case on my desk .

If style did not feature , in buying , then we would not have cases with lights , sniper MB"s and so on .

Very true, I'm not denying that I (and others) like to have their computer in a presentable state. I have the windforce, and while I was indeed off-put by the blue PCB (i have a black/white theme in my case), my final decision still came down to the fact that it's a great card cooling/temps/noise wise. At the end of the day that's what the card is for. Had I really wanted my case to look good, the EVGA one's would have been great. Or that limited edition white PCB 680!

On a side note, I don't really like the look of the frozr coolers much, but I guess I've just got bored of the design.

Yeah I guess its each to there own , I quite like the windforce , but asthetics aside , From the few reviews and comparisons iv seen the frozr beats the windforce , though its a hairs breath , One thing I have to say though is they seem to come in different sizes , I had an AMD 6970 lightning and its huge , I swear it used to dim the street lights when I powered up , or maybe that was thwe AMD chip side , but the 680 one I have is smaller with the same size fans as the windforce albeit just two . It does go better with the black MB"s although the board is actually brown . But the load temps are ridiculously good , my 680 doesnt go above 58 in afterburner , though the 6970 was hitting 83 . Guess there have been some improvements , Does the windforce come in different sizes with different chipsets ect ?

Im sending my 670 back.

The fan has an annoying sound, and Im getting the aweful stutter problem people are getting.

In quite a few games I play, when the 'boost' is automatically changing the clock speeds I get fps stuttering, I have heard Nvidia aren't making it so you can turn it off..... (which makes me hate them!)

Im sending it back and getting a 7970, had enough off this, I dont pay this much for a card with a tiny cooler (hence fastrer spinning fan) that has an annoying noise and most annoyingly stutter problems due to a 'feature' you cant turn off.

7970 is very well priced and I was going to get Nexuiz and Dirt Showdown anyway so ill be saving allot of money.

coil whine is loud but not nearly as loud as the cooler fans, right now mine are on max speed all the time, this noise goes down a hell of a lot when the pc side panel is back on plus when 10ft away whilst gaming via the TV :D

it's loudest on 1.3 V..... but not too bad at 1.25v

Get a gigabyte 3X windforce, best cards for either imho. As for 670/7970 it depends if you muind paying the extra for the 7970 and how far you intend to OC?

I always go for nvidia; historically better drivers for 3d apps.

Go to the Nvidia forums, see how many people have problems with Nvidia drivers.. I wish people would stop pretending that somehow Nvidia have magical drivers. I guess the 590 drivers were kind of magical.... Boom..

AMD and Nvidia drivers are both fine. Most of the 'problems' are down to user error. Most of the 'AMD driver problems' are perpetuated myths from Nvidia fans..

I use SLI 480's btw, never had a serious problem with either AMD or Nvidia drivers

i got problems with the latest nvidia drivers and youtube on my 560ti constant crashing and then says it recovers annoys the hell out of me but no prblems with anything else so they do both have problems. ive just bought the 670 windforce and kinda wish i bought the asus 7970 when it was on offer.

Chose the Gigabyte 670 than the 7970 mainly because it runs cooler & is cheaper.

been running with amd for many years since 4870 & i've had some problems with the drivers, exspecially the 11.x series, they just p***ed me off, waited to 11.4 or 5 until i finally moved from the 10.x drivers.

But overall, many more games are biased towards the nvidia cards so i've decided to taste the nvidia candy to see if it's any better and you can run physx if anyone really cares lol? (one game i'm very surprised about is metro 2033, the 7970 runs faster than the 670 even though it susposed to be nvidia biased :S) maybe drivers may provide a preformance increase? but games like skyrim, BF3, crysis 2 all cater towards nvidia. Top of my head deus ex caters fro AMD however i did experience terrible stuttering with an AMD card :/

++ i can now play games like rage :D it had so many problems with ati users.

Please note ive heard reports that 600 series stutter with v-sync on but that may be a rumour, you may want to research that if you game with vsync on... i don't.

Sorry to jump in here stevejigga but you recently entered the free ram comp.
Please check back as you have won the ram, you haven't configured your trust yet so can't get in touch with you.
I need your delivery address so I can post the memory to you.

it's not a whine, it's a sparky sort of sound.... like an Arc Welder, if you see what i mean... i've got the fans on full auto on the cooler, so it's now quiet, but the case fans have to remain fairly high, if not the card gets a bit too hot..

the temperatures went up on full load on the card by about 10 degrees, (with the case fans turned right down)....it's about 80 degrees on max MSI benchmark Afterburner right now, fan speed auto

i've now reduced the 7970 OC to :- 1200.....1680......1.243

Just wondering why OC3d haven't reviewed the 670? Was it because they dared to suggest that there was nothing between the 680 and 7970 in the 680 review?
