I don't understand why they've made the single player connect to a server the whole time, even if you don't make your game public. I bought this to play on my laptop, thinking I could use 3G for the login and then play offline, but actually the whole game needs a connection to a server, making it totally unplayable without a <100ms Internet connection.

As has been said many, many times. All content is stored server side to stop cheating, hacking and duping.

And the last bit is just rubbish. I live in the middle of nowhere with a terrible connection and I've played 50+ hours on it already so it's playable.

Give it a few days and you'll all be happily playing and forgiving and forgetting about this. Game has only been out for a few days and this kind of downtime is to be expected. Waited 10 years so a day surely ain't gonna make a difference.

I'm at work atm so I didn't even know about this downtime :)

I don't buy that, create a system to tag items/characters and instances as offline/sp only. I've heard loads of people who'd be happy to play by themselves, people do it all the time, <insert obvious pun>.
After all, to play online requires all this autentication, if it's as good as we assume it is, there should be zero problems.

No it's not rubbish. I want to play on my laptop in a hotel. I can use 3G to log in but the ping is not good enough to play the majority of the time.

D2 had offline play, but the thing is, very few people played it. The vast majority of players played on b.net servers so that their play time means something and they progress towards something. On D2 singleplayer once you've played through the game once there isn't a great deal of incentive to keep doing it.

Yes D3 being online only will cause problems for some people, but if you read up on D3 before buying then you would know it need a constant internet connection.

Well they did that in D2 and all it does is fracture the community in two. You had to have single player and multiplayer characters, it's far better to have them in one system. Sure there are some problems at the moment but Diablo 2 has had an active community for 12+ years, Diablo 3 has been out less than a week and 95% of that week it has been perfectly playable.

In the end you knew this game required you to be connected (and if you didn't perhaps you should read into a game before buying it)

Your ping doesn't need to be sub 100ms. Mine has varied between 100 and 500 and the game has been playable. So your statement IS rubbish.
