Got a case, what should I put in it for about £1000?

Hey guys,

I'm a developer / gamer, most of my PC parts are about 4 years old. I'm trying to get a leapfrog upgrade that'll last a few years. Would be great to get a spec review and recommendations.

Things I have already:
Corsair Graphite 600T, 23" Samsung XL2370, 19" Hundai N91W, OCZ Agility 2 120GB SSD, 2 x Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD, Seasonic M12 Modular 700W Silent ATX2.0 PSU

My initial stab at a build is this:

I'm happy with my case but would like my primary SSD to be usable (running with ony 10GB working free space on the 120) hence the 256GB. I've seen a division of opinions over the M4s vs OCZ, I'm open to change.

I'm planning on running stock at first until I need the extra speed, so overclockability is a win longer term.
Not sure if the existing PSU is powerful/decent enough, RAM is compatible (Website didn't seem to say) with the motherboard or processor comes with a reasonable enough heatsink, advice / recommendations appreciated. Also been a while since my last build, so any little things I need (thermal paste, cables etc) let me know if I need to buy new ones those.

Motherboard - I think the Asus Sabertooth is sexy, but not sure how it compares performance wise.

Price, I'm aiming at about £1000 but will go beyond that if it results in a decent jump in performance.

Really appreciate the help!

Answer : A plant
While particularly broke I thought buying the case (which looks like a storm trooper) would make me feel better. It's a really tidy case cable-wise, hdd nicely hot swappable etc.

Thanks Grimley, I've also never run dual SLI or CrossfireX but might consider it when they start getting cheap, would I need to bump the PSU to support those? would that affect the Noctua choice? The link you shipped said people struggled with the size of it.

Being a developer you will want the 16Gb, so lets keep that. However, i would suggest the Samsung Green instead of the Corsair Vengeance. It will clock very nicely indeed.

Thanks Rossi, the reviews look good for that, I was hoping to hold out for 2 matched sets to eventually fill up all the slots to 32GB that the mobo supports.
What does the Samsung Green have over the Corsair?

Cheaper (i got £16 for well under £100, but can't guarantee the price will stay that low), less voltage required, very low profile (no large heatsink problems) and they overclock a lot better

if you're definately going to go 32gb in future don't get the samsung green as it only comes in 4gb dimms. But you'll need low profile ram so get the vengeance LP.

Thanks Idleman, I've got Win 7 Pro.

Is the Gigabyte a better board than the Asus Sabertooth? Or was it just the price saving? I thought the thermal plating sounded like a win.

How does the Hyper 612S compare to the Noctua NH-D14?

The Hyper 612S is a fairly good cooler in that price range, although this is better

but have a browse through the link below.

Here is a review on the Sabretooth.

Checked your article, it looks like there's very little in it at this kind of range, but a cooler called Mount Doom surely pips to the post :p

How about the Gigabyte vs the Asus? I've seen a lot of people recommend the Z77X-UD3H. Not seen many opinions on the Asus though.

The Gigabyte boards seem to get recommended a lot because they have a better customer service and a UK based RMA center.
The UD3H is a good board for the price, offering sli/xfire at x8/x8 and sufficient usb 3.0 and 2.0 ports for most peoples needs.
But if you like the Sabretooth and it meets all your requirement, go for it.
I will be getting this myself, later in the year, when hopefully the price comes down, to replace my P67 Sabretooth.

Thanks for the down low, really appreciated!

Indeed, but comparing different architecture. The 3820 leaves an upgrade path for IB-E at a later date. The 3770K does not.
Also depends on what development it is, maybe he'd take advantage of 16 threads in the future.

That is why i linked the comparison, as the OP can decide which Cpu would be best suited, depending on the software he is using.
