Have warm hatches been replaced by diesels

There are loads- Focus Ecoboost 180 bhp, Golf TSi 170, Corsa VXR, Mito/Giulietta 170, DS3 1.6 155 DSport, Punto Evo 1.4 Turbo Abarth (161hp), Mini Cooper S, 308 1.6 Turbo, Leon TSi 210, Astra GTC 1.6T...there's never been so many warm hatches around.

Its good to see someone took the effort to list them instead of just taking the opportunity to be pedantic

I've probably not paid enough attention to these cars because none of them are jap, I guess its my fault for being ignorrant

Quite, but that's the position they sit. Golf GTTdi started the phase and things like the Fabia VRs sits in warm land.

Sorry I didnt know your ST had an ally block?

No it doesnt but it puts out 200ps, and revs to 7500. Far more than any diesel.

I reckon the 2 main things which stop diesels being fun are:

1. DAG
2. theres no separation of driving styles with the diesels. When you want to have fun in a petrol, you keep the revs up around 4-6000 rpm to get the power. With the low down torque of diesels, peak power is much lower, so your normal sort of driving is in the same area of sporty driving = no fun.
I'm not sure I agree. When we are talking really interesting things with screaming V10s at 8000 RPM - sure, a diesel can never replace that. But a petrol revving to 6500 RPM petrol is pretty boggo and not really any more thrilling than a diesel being driven in anger.

Revving a Clio 172 or a 306 GTi-6 or something to the redline is noticeably more thrilling than doing the same with a 2 litre 4 pot diesel.

I've mentioned it before, and doubtless it will be mentioned again. I hate the term 'warm hatch'

I think the thread a while ago someone pointed out that any practical hatchback with a fun sporty performance feel to it should be classed as a hot hatch. It's such a broad term.

In response to the op, I would disagree. There seems to be a lot of hot hatches around at the moment. There has however been a rise in dervs featuring sporty bodykits from the factory. The diesel corsas with the vxr styling seem to be very common all of a sudden.

I would say the trend of diesels being sold with a 'sport image' is down to two things

1. Economic climate and public perception of fuel prices

2. People buying diesels because they think they will save money and don't know any better when in actual fact a small displacement diesel engine in a car designed for pottering about in is just as pointless as the VXR body kit it's rocking too!

It's scientific fact that rev's = excitement :)

Makes me die a little when I see a soft top car with a tractor engine in it.

Yes, with 92bhp they definatley started the trend :D

But then in the same thread you've got someone saying that the Fiesta ST with its fairly lacklustre 147BHP and almost laughable 8 seconds to 60 sprint is a full blown Hot hatch because its handling abilities. We all know the 306 handled pretty fanatically for a run of the mill hatchback even with a diesel engine strapped in the front so why shouldn't it be considered a 'warm' hatch if people think the Fiesta ST can slip through the net on its handling abilities?

8 seconds 0-60 for a hot hatch isn't really "laughable" surely

Neither of which top out at 6500 RPM or have a power band like a boggo petrol engine. I was commenting on what stops diesels being fun, not hot hatches.

Well, excitement is different to fun. I with reasonable regularity drive two ~350 HP cars with about as different styles of power delivery possible - one a turbo diesel, the other an 8000 RPM normally aspirated petrol. The latter is certainly more 'exciting' in the literal sense, but they both have an aspect of fun for very different reasons. I agree on the convertible.

Are you really this clueless?

The 1980/1990 transition defined the hot hatch. I'd even consider my first car to be a hot hatch with its meaty 85bhp.... A Citroen AX GT.

The Fiesta ST is most definitely a WARM hatch. The Focus ST is borderline warm/hot, with the Focus RS a proper hot hatch.
