Have warm hatches been replaced by diesels

I don't really understand the question.

I'm sure I've missed some. But I can't think of any line-up that has a 200bhp ish diesel hatchback without a similarly powered petrol alternative.

:(

I don't really understand the question either, normally a line up will include diesel and petrol moving up the speed range.

For example my 125d is 218bhp diesel, there is a petrol 125i with exactly the same 218bhp. both hatches with the same bhp and handling one with diesel one petrol is the diesel version not as "warm" because of the fact it runs on diesel and not petrol?

I didn't say it was a hot hatch but the op was stating that a warm hatch can't be a diesel. Ot at least that's what I made of it.

Like said, its down to personal preference.

To me a hothatch is something that is revvy and fun and has the looks to go with it. Fiesta ST/VTS/RS clios/Pug GTI etc etc... All hot hatches in my book.

Warm hatch is some like a Zetec S. nippy but just not as raw as the top spec models.

I could never class a diesel as fun. If you were to look at the power through the rev range, in a diesel it goes something like

1000 rpm = 10% power output

2000 rpm = 80% power output

It's the way diesels splurge out all their power in one shot that does my nut in. You pull away at a roundabout casually with no power......no power.......POWAAA!! Can't stand it

Lol, id not have taken the bait if you hadnt quoted someone talking about the twin turbo 3 litre bmw unit, which is about as far removed from your description as possible:

Already has 150bhp at 1500rpm, 200bhp by 2krpm and 340bhp at a 4k, though i'm not quite sure why the graph stops at 4k as it pulls way past that, and the power isnt that far dropped off. Much broader power band than most petrols. It's certainly one of the shallowest curves I've seen!

I'd agree with you on single turbo 4 pot diesels, which is relevant to the thread I suppose, but given you're directly quoting someone talking about this engine when saying they are nothing nothing everything nothing, i thought you might need educating :P

A diesel can never be a hot hatch, not matter what you do with it.

Just like a diesel can not be a proper sports car imo. It can be fast, handle well but it's still a diesel - no matter it's power delivery characteristics or otherwise.

I have just got a 'warm' hatch and I would much rather have a small turbo petrol than a small diesel
mito cloverleaf has around 170 bhp and really pulls strongly is third and fourth..but its the ability to hold those gears that I prefer over a diesel

low cost to insure (for me) low tax, reasonable to fuel

I had an octavia vrs prior to the mito and its only giving 30bhp away compared to that, but its more nimble and more fun to drive

I think it terms of range availability the OP is perhaps off the mark. However if we were to look at what cars actually sell in volume, he may actually have a point!
