Beats Audio is a software mod with some even calling it a gimmick (understandable), S3 uses the Wolfson DAC so when paired with decent headphones it would wipe the floor with the One X and any other phone that doesn't use such a high end DAC.

The supplied earphones are likely to be sub standard, okay but not anywhere close to making use of that sound chip.

Budget for new earphones :p
 
On the One X it isn't purely a software mod according to reviews, the sound quality is one of the highest for phones.

And I think I'm glad that I didn't switch to a Nexus and now a S III, too much hassle it seems.

good stuff, thanks im dithering between the two phones, slightly leaning towards the samsung now as a replacement for my sensation xe :D

I'm not sure about it wiping the floor with it, the One X audio is pretty good and didn't somewhere report that the new Wolfson isn't all that great?

It makes no difference at all. I could have said German if that is who I thought it was. The nationality is irrelevant but the customer service is not. For whatever reason it went downhill and as a result we took our custom elsewhere.
 
The One X audio wise is pretty damn good, i dont know how it compares to the SGS3 but its bloody good...before i had the One X i had an iphone4 and i thought it was pretty decent audio wise but soon as i copied my mp3s over to the One X, i found it much better than the iphone4.

I then bought poweramp which has even made my mp3s sound even better ie i like my music quite bassy and with poweramp, which has adjustable equaliser settings...my music comes alive lol.

The SGS3 from what the reviews say is better audio wise than the One X but everyone hears music differently so i suggest trying one out before buying, same goes for the One X too.

Where was that posted? I've heard the beats audio although not on my own earphones but the stock ones and it was very bassy but lacked any detail or any soundstage.

It's in the same league as beats headphones. Lots of bass, not a lot of detail. You have to hear them side by side with the same earphones to appreciate the difference.

Question, how might this fair in the video/audio recording department?

Give an example i was to record a video in a club and the audio is distorted.
Compared to a phone like the sony errikson satio i think its called can video/audio record perfectley.

Is this to due with the quality of the audio chip or microphone?

That will be the microphone. The samples posted online from the S3, the sound is similar to the S2 running ICS. Fairly netral bass pickup but sound sthat are very loud and very close can get muffled although the only videos so far posted have been of moving traffic in a street which sounds about normal for a phone cam.

It's where video is concerned that it really is better than the S2 and the S2 isn't that bad at all unless you use 1080p where it zooms in (S3 doesn't).

Even the review that i saw between the One X and SGS3 audio wise, the guy said himself that its very very close. So where he gets this notion that the SGS3 'wipes' the floor audio wise with the One X is beyond me:confused:

And play customer service has gone downhill massively, i dont use them at all unless im desperate which i am not yet lol.
