Over 1TB 2.5" drives

What do we know about the likely timeframe for the next size increase for 9.5mm drives to be?

I have a 750GB WD drive + 240 GB SSD in my Macbook and ideally I want to replace the 750 with a 1.5TB, how long do you think I'll need to wait?

I reckon sometime within the next 18 months.

We already have 15mm 2TB 2.5" HDDs. WD (and Seagate) just need to increase the areal density and reduce the height of the drives.

Interesting, I didn't realise 2TB 15mm external drives were available...shame Apple don't support Usb3...yet.

Yea things like the ST1500LM003 have been available for yonks, i remember the question being asked in 2010 when a standard sized 1.5 would be available and the answer back then was around 6 months

The floods in Thailand seem to have delayed things a little. We should have 5TB 3.5" HDDs by now.

I think that is a bit optimistic, all the floods have done is speed up SSD adoption rate.

Well SSD production was not effected in the same way and the prices have dropped so much recently (Which could indicate over capacity in the marketplace or the next Gen are close to release - take your pick) it makes more sense for new or replacement boot drives to be the SSD form factor
