ASUS GTX670 MIXED FEELINGS

I picked up an Asus GTX670 DirectCU Top the other day, basically I thought it was the best 670 around for a few reasons, I thought I would share my findings ;).

The Card looks pretty good but I can not help thinking these 670's (all) are cheap mid range cards sold at a real premium. They are nothing like the quality of a reference GTX570/580 regarding build/design quality.

I got unlucky with mine and its going back ! (core was stable only if I down clocked 25+ mhz....so much for binning and quality control there then :p

I don't think I like this "turbo" boost rubbish it seems very inconsistent and like all those sort of things very dependant on driver software, so older games will suffer !

I think the performance of this card is very good in newer games like Crysis 2 and I think 1 of these cards is about enough to enjoy the game @1920x1200 for older games there is no improvement (but we have sufficient performance from last generation cards)

The most impressive aspect was these things use about 50 watts less power that a GTX570 which is good as they really have rung the neck on the GK104 it was running about 1228 mhz on boost.

Disappointing was the running temps...In the real world in a PC Case they get hot you will get them to near 80c if you work them hard, another disappointment was although the heatpipes/cooling fins are longitudinal NO heat seemed to be exhausted from the case :( , so as with all non blower cards you are going to cook the inside of the case. Saying that the Cooler capacity will hold the card in the 60c's but starts getting audible 65% fan and up ! (note I have a good Case with 4x 140mm fans)

Bottom line I still think these are the best 570's around but are £100 overpriced and I think I will just get a refund on my faulty card and as I thought previously "sit this generation out "

Advice to people who have to have one ;) would be pick up the cheapest gtx 670 reference style cooler as I have also found Core clocks do a lot less than memory clocks if you need to wind one of these up. for the rest of You keep your 570/580's as they are proven solid/reliable whereas the 670 do seem problematical, which I'm sure will be sorted in time.

It is a mid range card, look at the PCB compared to the 570

Lets not go in the normal direction here Dave :D We all know why Nvidia has got away with it ! and any business would do the same ;)

reason behind this is because the 670 consumes a lot less power and generates less heat than a 570/580, hence why you dont need lots of power phases or complex cooling to get the job done.

I would not say any of the coolers are any good in comparison to the GTX570.

Don't forget they are running this core @ 1.175 volts which is way more than fermi used, sure the cards core is more efficient but it is really being pushed in the OC cards and makes lots of heat. The OC card is only using about 20 Watts less power than a GTX570, so there is not much latitude in power regulation and cooling really, sure more so for the reference 670's

Honestly I've never been impressed with the design of any ASUS DirectCU card, and I generally am a fan of their products.

Asus is without doubt one of the very best manufacturers. I like the way they used 3 slots with some of the other Direct CU cards but then failed to design the cooler to get some of the heat out of the case

I don't think people really realize these multifan cards under heavy load just get hotter and hotter, and somewhere along the line you need another fan or 2 just to deal with the card, so you may start with a "silent" card but your sure going to hear the fans it needs to complete the job :D

Well I am somewhat in agreement regarding the Direct CU coolers.

I switched from a Direct CU Top 460 768 mb to a reference Gigabyte 680, and the 680 is as quiet at idle and significantly quieter at load, I'm also finding case temperatures to be a lot cooler overall thanks to the efficient exhausting of heat with the 680.

The 680 ref cooler is one of the best, if not the best ever for a top end card and has totally changed my opinion of enclosed coolers, I don't think I'd even switch it for the direct CU top 680 if I was offered to.

.

i really dont know what to make of these cu triple slot coolers

i saw someone disassemble one the other day and all of that weight is held in with 4 screws around the gpu - 4 screws to hold all that weight?!

surely that is not doing the card any good, it seems like theyve chucked a big cooler on there just to look cool but have swept aside the fact that it is really stressing the pcb and not properly cooling anything apart from the gpu

two good replies there ;)

I totally blame reviewers being allowed to test GFX cards in open Air....I know they would immediately counter with "all cases are different" etc..

Yes, all are guilty of pathetic mounting of these massive heatsinks, also the Asus 670 top's front mounting bracket is only fixed to a couple of HDMI screen shields not even the board (the board has a hole but its not used).
With front bracket, backplate and cooler all separate the card feels very floppy ! with the pci slot taking all the weight....Unacceptable for a £360 card

Happy with my non top DCU2 never seen temps go above 70 on auto fan setting and never hear the cooler also more than happy with the performance with no overclock after coming from a 6870.
Maybe the OP just got unlucky with a bad card i dunno......

Rogue card?

No way a 3 slot DirectCU 670 should get to 80degree's under load.

Glad i went for the Windforce 670! Cool, quiet, and o/c's well.

Sounds like you have not seen one ?

I wood think you windforce will be exactly the same on Auto fan 100% load for 1 hr in a case unless you have some good side fans !

I have seen both cards thanks.

You are correct in that poor case airflow is a potential pitfall for all non-external blower type cards.

BUT my Coolermaster HAF is obviously fine as its name suggests.;)

I have never seen load temperatures anywhere near that level. Here is an idea if you have the Windforce and good case airflow. This was recently on a very HOT day too! With GPU (and CPU) overclocked to a fairly high level.

Make & Model: GB Windforce 3x 670
Best Boost clock: 1299
Temp: 58
Noise: loud (100% fan)
Heaven Score: 1989
Heaven Avg. FPS:79

Edit:
Yes i know thats fans at full but thats all the data i had with temps to hand. It still MUCH less than 80degree under load on auto fan.

To add to what OCPete says, my Gigabyte Windforce 670 went to 1300 boost and some memory oc to (can't remember figures atm) and mine topped out at around 62-63c but fan only hit the early 40s %wise so, dead quiet too (Heaven or gaming), seriously is the best 670 for cooling and noise.

Yes all fans make a noise at 100% load, but the WF never ever went anywhere past 63c, and that was a hot day! :)

:D , So I'll take it I'm right on all counts then ;)

And Asus does not make a triple slot 670 Direct CU your eyes have deceived you ;)

Interesting post. But like the OP now, I think that I shall be sitting this gen out. No point upgrading for a lot of folks with a half decent card really.

So Pete's needs 100% fan to hold 58c and yours holds 63/63 with the fan at 40ish %....... ??? :D
