Diamond Jubilee - why this weekend?

i'm sorry but explain to me she actually does?

Hmm for starters she can appoint the Prime Minister, however traditionally she will appoint the individual commands the support of the majority of the House of Commons.

She can Dissolve Parliament.

She has the Royal Perogative

She is the Head of the Church of England.

She is the 'fount' of Justice, that is to say that although she does not prosecute cases personally, that ALL cases are tried in her name. You may have noticed that all Criminal Law cases are entitled Regina V whatevername, even if you are the person that has had items stolen etc. Basically it is The Queens Law in The Queens Country.

I believe, though I haven't found the relevant article, that she theoretically owns all of the UK, its something about the title granted to you to own the land is granted by her.

She is also Head of The Armed Forces.

Commmon Law also states that she cannot be prosecuted for any offences.

She can grant pardons to Prisoners.

She (and her predecessors) can and have created all titles and honours.

She is Head of the Commonwealth and Queen of Canada, Australia and New Zealand

Although a lot of her powers are Constitutionally devolved to the Prime Ministers and Parliaments of Her realms, she is in effect probably one of the most powerful people on the planet and I suspect that she has been a calm voice of reason and experience over the 60 years of her reign.

These are just a few the things she can do, there are probably a hell of a load more.

But apart from that, you carry on thinking she doesn't do much.

Contrary to some people's beliefs, the Queen cannot dissolve parliament, this power was removed by the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act 2011.

Under which, apart from the automatic dissolution in anticipation of a general election (whether held early or not), section 3(2) provides that "Parliament cannot otherwise be dissolved", effectively removing the power of the monarch.

The monarch 'may' have the power of "Royal Prerogative", but to be honest, it does not amount to much and most of the time, is enacted by the government, and not the monarch.

I don't think anyone really cares or even knows about this weekend anyway...

You're completely right, I don't know a single person, other than perhaps everybody I ever speak to, who knows about the Jubilee being this weekend.

yes but that is what she CAN DO not what she actually does, her position has granted that but have you ever seen her do any of that in 60 years she doesn' actually do anything she just is all that and can do all that think about it?

The Queen has been a very effective ambassador in her 60 years, and has frequently visited countries both inside and outside the commonwealth strengthening our ties with these countries. The royal family also generates a large amount of tourism from countries like America and Canada.

This, we are one of the only countries with a remaining monarch so to speak, this is excellent for tourism and they bring in hundreds of millions a year because of it. As well as this she is very good at enforcing relations between us and other countries.

Make good use of the Bank Holidays and your suspension to revise your English GCSE.

Ya know, the funny thing is, me and the misses don't watch any broadcast tv or listen to radio, so while I knows it's happening, it has happily slipped passed my radar. I am a royalist, but I could not care less about a jubilee.

The moral of the story is, broadcast television is brain washing folks. Take the antenna out of your set and I guarantee you will live a happier existence.
