Gigabyte gtx 670 or asus TOP edition 670?

Hi guys, I've returned my palit reference gtx 670 recently since it was far too hot and noisy for my liking, just got to wait for overclockers to refund me. I plan to get either the gigabyte or asus card. Just wondered which card you would buy and why?

Thanks for the links. Helped a little. I'm favouring the gigabyte card a little since it seems to have better cooling and is relatively quiet from what I'm hearing. But the asus card is so sexy especially with the back plate, although its quieter it seems to run a bit hotter. If anyone else has an opinion on both cards it'd be greatly appreciated :)

I have Asus and I'm pleased that card is very quiet, and looking nice.
The bad is that there is no heatsinks on the Memory, and backplate don't touch them too (there is a 1mm gap between backplate and memory chips).I think that can damage memory when OCed, if using for a longer time.

oh I see. I don't think any gtx 670s have memory cooling but I could be wrong. I know the gigabyte card has vrm cooling and I think the asus does too. What sort of temperatures are you getting?

Gigabyte has memory cooled.
Under load I am getting 75C on auto fan - this is when card OCed up to +185 MHz on GPU (1312 MHz boost).
When stock 72C ish - default fan settings too,

BTW I have non TOP card.

Oh awesome, I didn't know that. That's still reasonable temps considering the clock speed. That's a nice overclock for a non top! Very impressive. Well you've helped me decide, I think I'll go for the gigabyte model. Thanks :)

These 2 extra pins in PCIE ^pin are black cables so they not providing any extra power at all.
Even extension cables 6 pin to 8 pin has Female 6 pin , so IMO this is just marketing, nothing more.

Oh okay thanks. Yeah I didn't think it would make much difference anyway. You're asus is 2 x 6pin and you got an over clock above 1300mhz. Where as some gigabyte cards cant get passed 1240mhz. It's just the silicon lottery. I agree, it is most likely marketing to make you think the extra 2 pins will make it more likely to over clock well.

I'm not overly concerned about overclocking since the 670 performs brilliantly at stock. I just want a card that is quiet and cool. The reference card has a crappy cooler with a cheap heat sink. I couldn't stand the noise it made when gaming, it was quite high pitched and sounded like it was grinding a little. I don't expect that after paying £320 for a gpu. Shame nvidia cheaped out on the reference cooler :/

If quiet is a must for you I'd go for Asus. This card is whisper quiet and for 100% a quieter than Gigabyte.
70 ish is not a problem for these cards and still fairly cool.
I am running mine at stock clocks too, as there is no need for OC.

From what I've been reading on overclock.net, the TOP series is having some serious issues.

Yeah I've just been reading through the same thread. Doesn't sound too good. I'll definitely go with the gigabyte since I haven't heard of any issues with them as of yet. Just gotta wait 5 days for my refund. It's like torture! :(

Yeah the Windforce sounds very stable with good performance but, and I'm sure people will disagree but, I think it looks really ugly.
Maybe if I saw it in some good looking builds I'd change my mind but when it comes to looks, the Asus TOP with its backplate looks so much nicer.

I was reading through that thread yesterday and earlier today. I guess I am one of the fortunate ones as my TOP runs with factory-clocked GPU core boosted to 1306mhz with no issues.

I completely agree. The asus is definitely a looker but I'd choose performance over looks every time. I plan to get a corsair 500r soon anyway which has no window so it doesn't really matter. Besides the blue pcb will still go with most motherboards I'm considering to buy.
