[HELP - Earn £30!] i7 3770k + Asus P8Z68-V Pro + Corsair 16GB + GTX 680 - no boot

from looking on the ASUS website it appears like the bios may need updating to support the IB chip,

Can you boot a board without the chip and update the bios, Im sure you can?

just read this while browsing google: "z68's should run IB cpu's fine as you said with a BIOS update.. you would have to look on the Asus site for the correct latest BIOS.. as to performance with the CPU should be similar but will come down to the chip itself.."

Wondering if this is the underlying problem then.

I have tryied the MemOK button if that is the one you mean, but it doesnt appear to change anything, the same light sequence comes on. Sometimes it does cause the RAM LED to flash quickly, indicating that the board is actually going to do something but then power is lost again.

Will try without the 8 pin in a second but not sure because this is the second mobo I have tried. Neither show any visible burns or blown capacitors. The cables from the PSU to the mobo also look fine.

Like Bezza said, try flashing without the CPU. Check the manual it will tell you how to place the BIOS file on the USB and what to name it and which USB port to put it in.

Then if you do the offline flash it will update the bios and hopefully if that's what's causing the boot problems then you'll have a working system.

damn they beat me

i was gonna say Bios update had same problem with some1 with gigabyte z68 board on here which bios update fixed the problem for him and his IB

The Asus P8Z68-V PRO does not have the ability to flash bios without a cpu installed. So you would need to get your hands on an SB chip. You could try taking the mobo to your nearest purple brigade outlet or pc repair shop and asking them if they could update it for you. Or just return the Z67 and swap it for a Z77.

Thank you guys, just about to return the z68 and buy the z77 then. Thank you all but if this sorts it, I'm afraid moogle wins the prize :)

Well here's me hoping it sorts it then :D
Which I think it will. Always good to have spare testing parts to hand so diagnosing a problem can be done quickly.

Although having a spare CPU or motherboard is pretty rare :)

moogle, can I have the £30?

The motherboard must be quite old stock if it doesn't support the processor.

The BIOS supporting Ivy Bridge CPUs was released on 24 February.

Whoops :o Their stock is always very old.

Sending back my Z68 tomorrow hopefully and have already ordered the Sabertooth Z77 which has IB support out of the box. Will keep you updated! Paid for next day postage so it'll be here Wednesday 6th (stupid bank holidays).
