well found a cheap caddy off ebay that replaces your dvd drive with a case that has room for a 2.5" drive. stuck a 120gb ssd in and the existing 500gb mechanical drive as the 2nd one. i cant recall the last time i used a dvd drive after ripping all my films.

All games and movies off the internet?

I've been tempted to remove my disk drive for periods of time too. Just can't find the cover for the resulting space. :)

I will always keep my DVD drive until DVDs are obsolete (like diskettes and cassettes) and there is a new form of technology. What is the point in removing something that is still being used around the World? JUst wait for them to die like floppy did.

never used it and i wanted a SSD in my laptop. trouble is i have over 500gb of data so i needed either a 600gb SSD or another method.

Couldn't agree more - I can't even remember the last time I used the DVD drive (though it's a desktop not a laptop).

My ThinkPad doesn't even have a dvd drive and i've not missed it at all. All of my stuff, like yours, goes onto hard drives. I'm building an HTPC at the moment, which will use a dvd drive, but it'll only get used for watching films; nothing more.

I've replaced all of my DVD drives with Blu ray writers in my desktops and laptops.. they're just as unused as the DVD ones were :o

Hahaha!

I was tempted by blu ray drives but then i realised i would never use them. Optical discs never seem to last for me anyway so even though i can fit 50gb on them or whatever i'd just end up losing that 50gb!

Considering you can use an external box for a laptop cd drive with it powered etc and working from only USB there's definitely a case for using the internal slot for something more useful.
Have 2 drives in my laptop already in raid but adding a 3rd for an SSD boot drive is VERY tempting.

On my netbook I use virtual clone drive. Still need an optical drive on my desktop to create the ISO images first mind :D

This. I have 1 Bluray drive in my storage server (was in my desktop till I stopped using it) and no optical drives in any other system.
