I just went to Halfords at lunch time to buy a battery powered tyre pump, a can of tyre weld, some cloths and a few other bits and pieces. The altercation at the checkout I have re-produced for your amusement.

Me: *Puts items on cash desk*
Girl: *Rings up items*
Me: *Pays for items*
Me: Can I have a bag?
Girl: Bags are 2p
Me: *Hands over Visa again* OK, can I have a bag?
Girl: Sorry, we can't accept Visa for 2p
Me: I need a bag.
Girl: They're 2p
Me: I don't have any cash. Can you just give me a bag?
Girl: No *starts serving customer behind me*
Me: Attempts to carry items and drops several

FFS. Why didn't she just ask me if I wanted a bag for my many items when she rang them up in the first place?

Should have told her to refund the lot, then bought it again, with a bag.

I understand stores have their policies but that was being a **** for the sake of it.

Sounds like your cashier was an utter tool.

Not asking if you wanted a bag in the first place was stupid on their part.

Halfords are absolutely ****. I went to buy some replacement covers/bonnets for a 12V polisher they sell. They still sell the polishers but in their infinite wisdom, don't sell the replacement covers/bonnets for the polisher? I mean wtf is that about?

Or you could have obtained full refund for the items, re-purchased again with the 2p bag and then change your mind again and obtain full refund whilst smirking at the till operator.

I think it's reasonable to assume that, considering what you bought, you have a car. If you managed to carry the stuff to the till, surely you can manage another 5-10metres to your car?

Yes, she should have asked you if you wanted a bag, but is it really that big a deal?

I had walked as the Halfords is about 750M from where I work.

Recently had hassle with Go Outdoors where I live. Tried to purchase a water bottle and a thermal jacket to go with it and got to the checkout to find my member card had expired (£5 to renew) and no price tag on the thermal jacket.

Cue checkout assistant running around for the next 5 min trying to locate a price. He asked the store manager and then went to look on the internet for a price. I thought FFS why don't they just offer me it at discount or something so I told the guy to forget it and walked out.

Yup i've done that so many times. And it drives them insane. Don't matter what store it is. They all bloody hate it.

I love it when i do it, make sure i give them right big fat smile :D

I think it's more reasonable to assume, considering what he bought, that it's quite likely he has a flat tyre, and has potentially walked some distance from his car to get the equipment to fix it...

a battery powered tyre pump, a can of tyre weld,

(Yes I'm well aware the OP has stated he walked from work, but just because he was buying car stuff, doesn't mean his car is outside. ;))

Hmm, I didn't think of that. That would have been an excellent plan.

Go back with the receipt, get a refund. Then buy it again!

Stick to your principles!

Then as you walk out the door, look back and blow a raspberry :D
