Week in Japan, hand luggage only?

To save, time, hate having to wait ages after landing to get my bags. And saves having to carry loads of bags around. One less thing to worry about too.

You will save almost zero time. Have you flown long haul before? Your bags will be out before you clear security 90% of the time.

It is easily doable, I'd say it depends on your situation when you're there as to if you'd want to or not.

Travelling/moving around a lot then yeah it makes sense to take as little as possible, but if you're just going to a friends for a week there's no massive need to travel light.

Narita is pretty painless for baggage collection last time I went through there, (I can't comment on Hadena).

Amount you can take should be on the airlines site (for instance JAL quote 10KG although I don't remember them checking and I was flying very close to that on the way back last time).

I dont know others experiences but I have found recently there is more and more evidence of people having luggage taken off them on the plane due to too many people taking too much on.
Not necessarily the people with too much luggage either but maybe the unlucky one who cannot find somewhere to put it.
Does my head in to be honest how when you fly easyjet etc they make so much effort to check (so they can charge you) yet you fly virgin/BA etc and they seem to ignore it.

Don't be that douche with a 500Kg oversized carry on as good as a suitcase person who takes up an entire overhead baggage compartment and almost knocks someone clean out with it when you unbuckle your belt like a fighter pilot punching out to get off before the plane has stopped moving while the cabin doors are still firmly closed.

Just sayin.

I've had to wait an hour for baggage at Dullas, but it is a **** hole.

Dulles isn't so bad. It's a **** terminal design for such a busy hub but I've never had a problem with baggage or customer service there and I'm usually through it once a month or more.

As for the OP, check with your airline. Just check a bag though. Carting hand luggage through security can be a pain, especially if you have it packed to the gills and they decide to search it further. And if you are on a fully booked flight and board late, you could end up having to gate-check your bag anyway.

Probably because it's a myth.

The reality is they've been outlawed for over a decade (assuming we're talking about the vending machines here...).

i dunno, the fact at some point someone had to sit down and draft a law banning the sale of used ladies underwear in vending machines hints that it was some what more than a myth.

I mean it's a popular myth that they are still common.

If I remember correctly, even when they were legal they were actually only allowed inside 'adult' shops, and not 'on the street', as the myth would also have you believe.

I have just visited Tokyo and I found my checked baggage was already there when I got to the baggage reclaim hall, that is Haneda airport by the way. In Heathrow on the way of course my baggage was already checked in so it took 2 minutes to drop off the bags. Really was no hassle, I would say having a massive hand luggage is more hassle as you have to take it around with you and fit it in the overhead storage.

If you want to know how big you are allowed then just check your airlines website.

I didn't see any used underwear vending machines anywhere either. :p

If it was free I'd check it in. If it wasn't free I'd take carry on luggage.

The size of the bags allowed in the cabin is surprisingly big. The one I've just bought is H55 x W35 x D20 cm which is within the size limit for RyanAir and a large chunk of other airlines, if not all of them. The thing I'd be more concerned about is the weight limit. On some carry on luggage I've seen as little as 7kg allowed. Which isn't very much considering your bag may weigh a few kg itself. Although I've never had my carry on luggage weighed...

One more thing, seems like a lot of people have got lucky with short wait times with luggage. I don't fly often but have waited for more than 30 mins on several occasions at Bangkok, Heathrow and LA. LA was nearer an hour's wait.
