Blast and double blast!

Just spent the evening upgrading the missus PC.

Switch it on...install Windows...

Start hearing this strange noise, almost like a hard disk scratching but not quite...

Power off and come back to it later.

Switch on again...boots to Windows...noise comes back...and then a nice singeing smell floats up out of the case...

PANIC!!! POWER OFF!!!

Have a guess what component I think it is...

Then guess the make/model of that component...

I'm going for some sort of fan with a trapped cable, going for gentle typhoons as i've never seen people complain about the so hears to a first

No trapped cables I checked everything like that just to be sure.

Spot on with the PSU Doomedspeed...wrong brand though...though I hope I haven't made a mistake purchasing an emergency Coolermaster 600W Silent Pro!

Ok i'm going to be truly outrageous and pick a part with no moving pieces because that makes the least possible sense. Then i'll pick a reliable version of that piece of hardware. Crucial M4 128 GB SSD.

edit: Damn. Your post beat me.

Ah sorry...just realised that I'm probably leading you down the garden path (I'm tired)...I'm upgrading the missus PC with scavenged parts from an older machine, you'd never get it if you were thinking of new parts.

It's this little tinker...or should that be stinker...

I bought three of them altogether when they were current models, two for my machines and one for a family members...two of them have exploded quite spectacularly, and now this one is dying with a wimper.

Absolutely shocking power supplies!

I'd just got it all neatly wired up as well and the missus needs the machine tomorrow to complete some work forms!

Gah!

Sorry for any confusion, tired and cheesed off now!
