If you go anywhere you have to exercise caution - if I could otherwise justify going I wouldn't let this put me off.
I'm just interested in why Colombia rather than, say, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, etc - what is it that appeals to him about Colombia specifically? Or is that just where the job is?
Maybe, maybe not... I think it's accepted that if you go to one of these places with (what I assume is) a charity that you're aware of the risk you're taking. Perhaps you're right though about where they'll put him. My very basic understanding of Colombia is that there are lawless areas, and areas where it's not so bad.
I think it just depends on the degree of risk. I thought Colombia was as bad as it gets, but I really have very little idea about it all.
From what I understand, South/Central America goes in cycles - Colombia was awful a few years ago, and has now calmed down a lot. I imagine the majority of drug running goes to where there is least media coverage of the violence?
I think a good thing to read is the official UK government stance. Whilst it basically has a bunch of info to scare the poo out of you, it's always pretty up to date and it only tries to make you vigilant. Here's the one for Colombia:

Take it with a pinch of salt, although it's fair to say relatively speaking it is one of the more dangerous countries to visit. Again, I've met locals from there who say it's all overhyped and travellers who loved it.

I recommend you read The Killing of Pablo by Mark Bowden as the whole Pablo story including his death is a brilliant story. There are plenty of pics of him all shot to bits laying next to the guys that shot him, Or one of his many Doubles.

As for moving t Colombia I'm assuming you speak fluent Spanish, but don't expect to be carrying on normal conversations for awhile. The dialects there are like here in that normal street language is very different from "Queen English". I moved here from America many years ago and still have problems understanding "pub language" in many parts of our fine country. The same applies there.
Bit of trivia. One of the big reasons China is teaching English as second language is because until 20 years ago Chinese living 20 miles apart often couldn't understand each other's spoken language. Written language they understood, but not spoken.
