*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Really starting to think the S is going to be my upgrade from ny Desire, now. The OneX and s3 are too expensive, and far too big anyway! Hopefully tmobile will do me a good deal, anyone got a OneS with them on contract?

Also, is there anything I should know besides the chipping issue? Do I need to make sure I get one from a new batch or something? Will probably pick it up in store so what can I check when they give it to me?

Om nom nom nom!

You can use the XL here it only has a 10GB storage and the same 3.7v battery, hopefully they next one will be more like the EVO.

Looks like Robbo will be getting it instead of the GS 3 now! :D :p Or maybe he will just get both anyway?!

:p

I haven't, but the best deal that I have seen for the S on T-mobile is:

- 750MB data
- £21 a month for 24 months and no upfront cost
- 100 minutes
- unlimited texts

You just missed an epic deal at CPW for the S on vodafone network though :(

As for chipping issues, I think you should be fine with whatever version you get now as it seems like it may have only been an issue with the first few batches. But the new version should have a bevelled USB port and slightly smoother edges than the old one:

And you can just tell them there and then that if you do experience the chipping issue, you have every right to return the mobile and get a replacement S, no questions asked. Just show them all the threads on the internet and news sites if they do question you:

Some people are complaining about signal strength as well, however, I and most others in this thread have no problems with it. Again if you do experience this problem get a replacement if possible and see if it persists.

I think those are the only 2 problems that some people are experiencing.

WOOT! Mine has just updated to 1.77 on TMob :-)

1.77?

Is the latest here not 1.78 something?

How big was the update? Notice any improvements so far?

Yah, 1.77.110.5

57mb...not noticed anything yet but to be honest it's been on charge since the update.

Hmmmm

I think you may have got the update that was released about a month ago as that is roughly the same size as what it was.

Latest one for USA T mobile is about 26MB iirc.

Is that your first update for the S?

If it is the first update, you should notice that wifi related tasks are a bit quicker now :)

I shall see!

So in other words, "Yup!" :p :D

ver 1.78.401.2 here on talkmobile with simfree handset.

just phoned up Virgin Mobile to cancel me old contract, they offered me 800mins 3000txt 1Gb data for £5.40 p.m rolling contract :o could not turn that down!!!

That deal!

Yep...first update. TMobile were a little slow to release it.

:p :D

There is an option that you can enable to automatically check for you every now and again and to notify you when an update is available :p

I just manually check.

Ah right ok!

It is a complete and utter joke the way networks hold back updates! They shouldn't have to do anything to the software!!!

om nom nom nom  :D

Photo was taken under standard lighting in the kitchen, I think that might have been using the "close shot" shot mode.

Excuse the xmas plate :p :o, it was the only plate left.

And yes I know that I am a fat ******* :o :p :D

@Nexus18 Great set of pictures and a good example of HDR usage there Mate!

It's a good feature to have on the phone however even your "normal" pictures look great which is a testament to the fine camera that the HTC One S has! :)

Thanks for letting me know about which weather app and skin you're using, it looks really cool and will check it out myself. Infact the whole launcher look that your using looks very classy and compliments the phone very nicely :)

That new vid of TC is pure genius! What a character he is and im not surprised that he's King of your Cul-De-Sac! I was laughing away when I read your comment that he strolls into your neighbours house and just lies on the couch! That's a classic! :)

Oh yes I thought the same about the One S pics, they look much more detailed and sharper, with a better colours. One S all the way! :)

I love the way this post is going, plenty of contributions from everyone and great videos to boot. This thread has really taken off! :D

@Skillmister Superb pictures and videos submitted there, good examples of what the HTC One S camera can do. Are you pleased with the way the phone handles the day to day stuff?

@Nexus18 I would take the XL over the G3 as well however unfortunately it's not coming to the UK I called HTC this morning and they confirmed that it won't be available in the UK. HOWEVER it's coming to certain parts of Europe this month and will be released in Germany and you will be able to order one from a Rainforest in Germany and it will work in the UK as the GSM/3G networks on the XL are identical :)

Right all...I'm off to bed as I have to be up early for work...thought I'd quickly check out this excellent thread and post something.

Awesome thread! :D

Night all!

Thanks :)

Indeed!

No problem :) It is a great weather app, for my area it is very accurate regarding the weather. Yeah I love that layout, been using it for a very long time now, even when I try a different layout, I just end up going back to the black style after a few hours :p Certainly does, the black bezel around the screen just makes it look even better.

Haha yeah, he is unbelievable. Just eats everything in sight i.e. today he ate a fly (think it was a hornet as well ) then about 10 minutes later 2 pretty big spiders  He even eats our food sometimes, licking the porridge bowl, tried some curry sauce, queen of puddings (the raspberry jam part), a small bit of naan bread (WTF!?!?!) etc. lol. Licks the bowl clean every time as well :D

He is a wee rascal the way he does that! We just get a phone call saying, "could you come and get your cat out of our house, please?" lol :D

The way he walks is so weird, funny & cute as well, it isn't a normal cat walk, he has a swagger to his walk LOL, not sure if he has a problem with the lower part of his spine or something or if is just due to his back legs being very muscular/big :p You can sort of see what I mean in one of the slow motion videos I posted earlier with him playing with his blue ball, the way he runs is more of a gallop :D

Ah shame that :( At least we can buy it from those places that you mentioned :) Do you think you will buy one and sell the S or you happy with the GS 3 and S?

Certainly is! 5 star thread!

^ Is that on the TalkMobile/Vodafone network? They have poor coverage compared to the others. (hurry up o2 tower share!)

Here's a few more thoughts.

- Signal strength and baseband are a bit messed up. It's v.slow and jumps around towers all the time, hopefully we'll get a fix asap. For me 3G is unusable, 3000kbps download and 1500kbps upload one minute, no signal the next. (I don't think it's a poor antenna design, the One X has the same type of thing?)
- You can death grip both wifi (top antenna) and mobile signal (bottom antenna) but that was to be expected.
- The rear speaker is a bit quiet.
- The capacitive buttons don't dim with the screen? (assume this is just a bug)
- The data connection turns off at night, how do I keep it on? (another Sense bug?)

On the plus side...

+ Performance is just incredible (Flash could be dump load better but that's just buggy Sense)
+ Dice player decoded a 42Mbit/s, 24fps mkv with 5.1 sound! (a pointless test when you only have access to 10GB storage)
+ Decent battery life, even with a poor signal (expect it to improve 20%+ with better Qualcomm drivers and HTC optimisation)
+ Wifi signal strength is great.
+ You kinda get used to the pentile screen after a while. (Even though I'd still kill for a 480*854, low power LED-backlit LCD :p)

Nah its on 3, signal strength also changes when it switches between 3G and H, hopefully its just a software issue which they can fix...

Don't forget the S4 has a brand new modem (the worlds first super duper programmable multimode modem no less :D) Reselection, redirection and packet switching are bound to need better optimisation (and LTE areas probably get priority resources)
I'd give the a few more months for more solid firmware and this is the first time they've used nVidia/Intel hardware too, they bound to be busy :D

Yeah, absolute joke on HTC's end. Do they not realise that is the main reason people are selling their S and getting the X/GS 3 or some other phone instead?

It is a weird issue though as some experience it and others don't, nearly all the people in America seem to experience it :p And only a few here have problems, could it just be the networks issue as well? IIRC there was some problem with a few of HTC phones and signal strength with vodafones network?

Pfffffft, Sarge you're holding it the wrong way!

:p

I do wonder if my mobile data connection speed would improve by quite a bit if the issue were to be fixed/improved as I think I should be getting better than 2MB/s dll etc. at my house on o2 network.

Can't comment on the mobile data connection not staying on at night as I am always on wifi pretty much (option to stop it from sleeping during inactivity in the advanced menu), however, if you are experiencing that mobile data connection issue quite badly then that could be why the mobile data connection doesn't stay on.

I noticed for my area that if I have GSM mode selected instead (even when wifi is connected still) my voice reception is better and more consistent as opposed to having only the WCDMA option selected (think this is normal enough though?)

And my 3G/H is more consistent when I have only WCDMA selected as well.

Indeed! The flash could be much better! Playing back 1080P/720P youtube videos etc. isn't as smooth as what it should be
