*** The official HTC One S thread ***

I'll see if 1080p60 will break it. Gonna post the kernel on XDA, my first and probably last contribution :)

Get it rooted man !! screw your warranty, live on the edge.

You can have then have a Sixaxis running N64 using your MHL lead on your big tv for example :)

Ok thanks :)

Lol, I know I know! But I am too scared!!!!! :o :p

Stop tempting me even more now! :p I now have 3 reasons to root!!!

- get rid of ads
- be able to use the sixaxis whilst playing N64 when connected to the TV
- Increased refresh rate

DAMN TEMPTATION! :p

EDIT:

Oh and being able to connect USB devices such as hard drives (I think I seen a tweak for this?), so actually 4 reasons! DAMN! ¬_¬

:p

@Nexus18 , so is your refresh rate at 24hz too when you press info on the tv?

My MHL cable has just packed in, the power socket has just disconnected itself. I'm not sure whether that had anything to do with the **** refresh rates. Think it would have been the same anyway.

As soon as I connect the MHL cable to the phone and TV, the TV switches to the HDMI channel and this shows up in the top left corner:

1080P, 24Hz and 16.9 aspect ratio

Damn :( No idea why that happened either, what MHL cable did you have?

Looks like a fake Samsung one.

Ah ok, I just have a generic black one, only cost like £7 :p

Actually that is another thing, with your MHL adapter, is the sound from the TV very low when you're playing games, films etc. on via the mobile? With mine, I have to turn the volume up by a good bit to make it the same for volume as it is when just watching TV etc.

Not sure if this is a problem with my MHL adapter, the TV, the mobile or just a standard thing?

Damn, need to do more testing but it's looking good.

:)

What sort of battery life are you getting with that ROM there? :) Have seen a couple of people say that they can get 8 hours on screen time with it  I am having a hard time believing that though (unless they have screen on 0% brightness all the time or/and don't browse at all :p)

It would be possible I think. I was reading a book on Kindle the other day for an hour and ten minutes on auto brightness, no wifi and good mobile connection and used only 7% of battery. The maths would suggest I should get over 8 hours screen on? Reality is different. I'm getting maybe a little better life than stock but there are too many 'depends'. If the phone is struggling to hang onto signal (which it does rather too much) then battery seems to suffer.

Hmm, can't say I've had an issue with the volume.

If anyone with an MHL adapter wants to test this overclocked kernel to see if they get a better refresh rate then 1080p 24hz, click the link below.

Hmm, wonder if it is the TV or MHL adapter then......

Thanks, when I root :p I will give it a go :)

Wow!

Did you have a black background with white text or white background with black text?

Yeah, you should get somewhere near that, as said very hard to tell though as too many factors to consider.

What is your average on screen time with that ROM and roughly how much browsing would you do?

Looks like another reason to root and flash now! :p

@ Nexus - what's up with the lack of ICS animations on the HOS and Apex? Lack of eye candy is disturbing :(

And exDialer stutters :( when scrolling contacts - even worse than on the S2

First impression of the design and build: Well built, nice materials, smart design. :)

Will add more feedback after more play - anything specific you want me to test Nexus?

Lack of animations?

You sure that you have enabled animations in apex and in the developer settings? :p

What animations are you missing? I have the ICS screen rotation animation, tablet animation on apex when on homescreens and card stack animation when in the app drawer etc. sense doesn't have the overscroll/glowing blue effect, if you hold your finger down when in the settings menu and at the top or bottom end or some other sense related thing, it has a different animation style, it sort of separates the items when you drag down/up.

You also have some cool/smooth animations in the stock gallery.

I just installed ex dialer last night again and I have no stutter whatsoever on mine (with ICS theme AC installed as well), have you forced GPU rendering in the developer settings? How many contacts do you have? I only have like 35 or something :o, so that could be why maybe as you may have a lot more contacts than me?

I have uninstalled it again though, prefer the sense dialer :p

Hmm, don't think so really :p Just interested to hear what you think of the usual stuff i.e. sense overall, camera, screen, audio, speed and smoothness throughout the mobile including browsing and how it stacks up to your GS 2 and GS 3 overall :)

Maybe a comparison of photos taken by the GS 2, 1s and GS 3 and a photo of them all side by side to see the difference in size between them all if possible :)

The stock ICS transition is demo'd here @ 7:01 minutes:

when he presses the people's app. This transition should be OS wide when opening and closing apps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=J0LH_-vlOT4#t=418s

seems HTC in their mind boggling wisdom have disabled this feature.

I had GPU rendering enabled - exdialer still stutters; I have 170 contacts. And HTC have implented that sticky scrolling - no fast free scrolling like the S2. :(

Any those are just my preferences - not bashing the HOS - it's just different. :)

Pentile though - very noticeable.

Ah yeah I see what you mean now, there is some sort of animation when opening the phone and other sense apps etc. though, it isn't as noticeable as the animation in that video, it is more of a fade in/out animation but very subtle I think......

HTC quietly brilliant but also quietly stupid at the same time! :p :D

Hmm that could be why then! I unfortunately only have about 35 contacts :( :o

Yup, we have different likes/dislikes at the end of the day, all personal preference :)

What do you think of the screen overall compared to the GS 2, better, worse or much the same?

Yeah the sense animation is old hat to me - no real animation when you open the app - and a fade out animation when you exit the app. I really like stock ICS animations.

Yeah don't know why they left it out - just like HTC and Samsung left out the crt animation.

quick comparison screen wise - the colours are a touch more saturated on the S2; when comparing a high res nature pic side by side, both at full brightness (which is about the same on both btw), they look very similar, HOS fits a bit more of the picture in due to a higher res but because of the pentile effect - it doesn't look any sharper than the S2 and in some pics the S2 looks sharper. I can really notice the Pentile effect too - much more than on the S3.

I prefer the S2 screen tbh - also the icons are a little bigger on my screen dpi wise which I prefer on my homescreen layout and app drawer - my icons in the dock are bigger and look better to me - haven't got time to go into detail at the mo but I'll have the phone till the end of Monday so will give more feedback from now till then. :)

Yeah, personally for me I am not too bothered on animations, would have liked to have had the overscroll colour effect though. Like the animations on the homescreen and app drawer for apex though :)

Oh yeah, just remembered that animation too! Would love to have that as well! STUPID HTC!!! :p  :(

I don't think any phone apart from the nexus's have it though? (unless you root and flash a custom ROM etc.)

I found that to be the same as well regarding colours.

Really?! I found the S to look sharper overall when sat next to my friends GS 2 (even he said the same), found it more noticeable when comparing the text and web pages though, but when comparing the likes of the notification bar icons and some other app icons and white text on black background, the GS 2 does look slightly better due to the RGB matrix (we had the screens set to about 40% brightness).

Maybe my friend and I need to get our eyes tested............ :p :o he already wears glasses though, so he may just need a new pair of glasses :p lol :D

Yeah the GS 3 is super sharp everywhere! To be expected given the res. though :p

No worries, there is no rush :) Look forward to reading more of what you think! :)

Oh nice, didn't know that, thanks :) Have never really used SE phones properly, not too keen on them :p :o

Two thumbs up to SE for keeping that that! :)

Indeed - not a fan of Sony/SE either - they don't quite have the complete package IMO - don't like their skin either.

I have noticed the slight pink tint on whites with this HOS screen - pretty much just like the AMOLED Deisre I had before the S2. The S2 has a very slight off-white tint and the S3 is really white with the slightest hint of blue - but in isolation the s3 is very very bright white.

And its very annoying that the battery stats on the HOS reset after a reboot.
