Flights to NYC questions.

Slightly off topic but I am going to NYC in September, but is it just me or is hotels/accomodation hugely expensive out there!?

I did this trip last month on Delta. IFE is on demand and was OK, certainly watchable (although they charge for HBO TV programs for some reason). While the airtrain is the cheapest way into Manhatten and very quick I took the $45 cab in as I wanted to see NYC from a cab like in films etc... I got the A subway/ airtrain back though and it was fine, just took a bit longer.

Hotels are fairly pricey but a lot of it is location. I stayed in the upper west so while I had to subway to most things, I had Central Park nearby and tons of great resturants although wherever you stay will have these. Highly recommend Kefi on Columbus av if you need any food in the upper west, great place.

I agree with fox you can't beat air train and LIRR into manhattan, its quick easy, cheap and painless

I flew Virgin in Feb and a few years ago cos you get 1" extra legroom in economy compared to BA, Delta etc. when your 6ft5 it means the world!

Hotels in NYC has always been expensive (accommodation is one of the most expensive in the world, but pretty much like all major cities really)

I can get a half decent hotel in London for £120 a night, we are talking 4 star, really clean, modern etc.

Looking on Trip Advisor (I know, I know), you are looking at $350 for something of similar quality, which is double the price of London, the cheaper ones (lower rank on the list) are around $250 but if you read the reviews there are loads of hotels with mention of bedbugs, which seem to be a common thing ! Nasty !

I also have a pet hate of these floral beddings, feels really 70's and god knows how long they've had them.

The one I've found that is quite reasonable is this TRYP, it is fairly new, i think it opened only last year, right next to Time Square. 5 nights with two double bed is $1,500 + 15% tax. So works out at around £600 per person for 5 nights, which is a bargain in NYC.

That looks like a nice hotel.

I may be going there solo (on the way to a conference in Denver) - most places don't cater for solo travellers so it looks like I am paying twice as much! May go with the Pod Hotel or see if I can find someone to come with me.

I know when we flew to LA, BA were doing an awesome deal and you could upgrade to premium economy for £199 I think. The only benefits I could see were the legroom, and the meal upgrades. You get the business class food & wine, which may be worth it for some. Entertainment system is exactly the same

I need an eye out for this then, was it through the website or through a travel agent?

Stay in Newport Jersey City or Hoboken, might be cheaper and the PATH is a quick trip under the river to Manhatten. Its nice leaving the bustle of the city and staying where it is quieter.

Nice views of the city too - view from my apartment roof when I lived there

^^ personally I wouldn't mind staying outside manhattan but my friend wants to stay where it is walking distance to time square etc. Not fussed as we are sharing accommodation so even with the extra expense works out around £600 each for 5 nights.

New Jersey has no sales tax on clothes, New York is 9%. There is a decent sized shopping Mall in Newport -nothing like the larger ones West but they are driving distance.

Also PATH to 33rd street takes about 15mins and then its a short walk to Times Square (or Metro if you are lazy). Its $2 dollars each way on the PATH.

Looking for flights to New York in October, namely departing on 2nd and returning on 11th and I have a few questions and wondering what are people's opinion. There will also be an internal trip to Atlanta from 7th to 11th. So the return leg is Atlanta to NYC to LHR.

1 - who do I fly with? BA or Virgin Atlantic, they cost about the same, or Delta? I am guessing virgin is the preferred choice crossing the atlantic.

2 - how long is the journey from JFK to Manhattan? Just thinking about departure time (travel from my house to Heathrow), and landing time (hours left on the day to do things).

3 - can I buy flights from NYC to Atlanta now, if so, who with and if I can't, do I buy it at the front desk at the airport?

4 - what are the immigration rules now with regard to entering the US? Do I need a VISA? Fill in any forms before I leave? Or just need my passport?

Thanks.

I have flown with Virgin 2 times now to NY no problems

JFK to Manhattan is about 45mins if traffic is not bad and also get a yellow cab not one of the mini buses as they can take longer.

Accommodation is booked now (non-refundable) and it works out £600 each so it's fine :)

Still looking for flights though, no change today in prices.

It's a bit soon for booking trans-Atlantic flights for October. Prices this far out are usually average at best, however, closer to the time and especially for October, cheaper fare buckets will open around 4-6 weeks before. There are usually numerous special offers to NY and you'll most likely see these pop up in September.

I usually book my flights across the Atlantic 7-14 days before, except for high demand periods such as holidays, olympics etc. I've literally saved £thousands by doing this.

Thanks, I'll wait then :)

(although I am trying to time my flight to NYC so it lands around the same time as my friend flying up from Atlanta. At the moment there are a BA and Virgin flight that lands around 16:40 and she can get a flight that lands 18:00. We figure after clearing customs for me it'll be around the same time and can get a cab into the city together. If I wait, or she books now, or one of our flight is full then the above plan won't work, not end of the world by any means but would be nice that's all)

Might even go for premium economy if there is a good offer on.

Anything ~£400 is a really good price into NY. You might get slightly cheaper in a ridiculous sale but that's not that common nowadays. Almost £300 of that is spent on fuel surcharges, taxes, fees etc...

I saw the break down of that on the virgin flight, £150 fare, £350 taxes etc!

I'm going to wait a little bit, if it doesn't change then £494 (currently) isn't that bad considering the above.

I echo this.

I stayed in Newark at the Hilton above Penn Station. It was half the price of an average place per night on Manhattan and from my room to World Trade centre was under 30 minutes using PATH or even less if I used NJ Transit trains.

I think it was 90 quid a night?
