Are you a feminist?

I just wondered if people round here would regard themselves as a feminist? That is you believe women should be equal to men.

I would say that I definitely am, and I seriously can't see why anyone wouldn't be. There's still a lot of sexism in society today, not just in the workplace and it just seems to go unnoticed.

For example the sexual objectification of women that you see all over magazines, adverts, posters and strip clubs. It's ridiculous how women are brought up to think they should be wearing make-up, must make an effort to dress well etc. Women's magazines seem to portray an image of woman that they all should aspire too. A lot of them also spout **** such as 'top 10 ways to please your man' and other nonsense. Why is a woman's magazine all about him?

I recently read Caitlin Moran's, 'How to be a Woman' and she says, 'If men aren't doing it, then it's ********', and I wholeheartedly agree.

It is utterly bizarre to me that women are still thought of as second-class by some people. I wouldn't call myself a feminist though. I'd like to think of this opinion as being 'normal'.

You know mens mags have 10 ways to be better in bed etc too right?

It's in there because
a) many people enjoy sex and like to try new things
b) many people are insecure about their performance so a "tips" article is an attractive incentive to buy

Depends on the thread, smash her pasty, get back to the kitchen etc etc etc is spouted here quite often but then people turncoat and start becoming a raging feminist when it suits them.

Equality?

Do I belive in equal rights for women? Yes.
Am I a feminist? Definitely not.

The term may once have been purely about equal rights but now it seems more closely related to an extremely opinionated political view where women are superior and men are not needed or wanted.

Equality is fair and just.

Feminism is a complete crock of ****.

Feminists - ugly girls who want to be treated like pretty girls.

I am not a feminist in any way shape or form. But do believe we are equal.

HOWEVER - It is a simple fact that in most cases there are jobs more suited to men and some more suited to women. Case in point -

Female ICT teacher: I can do your job, easy
Me: The sitting at the desk and general job part yes. Now lift this server above your head and put it in the rack, or lift this printer into the loft.
FIT: Its too heavy!
Me: Then climb under the dusty/dirty stage and check the network cable has not been eaten by mice?
FIT: Its dirty/scary/I might break a nail.
Me: Cant do my job then.

Alternatively -
FIT: I am doing three things at once
Me: Thats me out then...

Some of us "engineers" have had a little convo about this as well.

In all regards, women should and do have EQUAL rights, but by no means should they be treat exactly the same as men, because they are NOT men and there are huge differences between them.

In our university we have several women also studying engineering. While some women may become successful in that area it is highly unlikely that all will since women have a much lower level of creativity and imagination - That's a proven fact (Google the area yourself)...

Whenever have you read something where a woman has invented something that has changed the world? All pioneers are mostly man - and that's where the difference lies.

I'm all for equal rights and everything.

But don't think just because you are a woman you can take the wee and treat me like a piece of poo.

It basically annoys me when they think they are better than you, and can get away with anything, that's when I get agitated :p
