Damn my hesitation!!

Can I add Six feet under ?

Watched the box set through 3 times now - superb piece of TV.

You could, it is certainly good TV, but its not really West Wing good, its a bit airy fairy at points, has a lot of flat spots, and gets far far to weird for me to be able to enjoy all that much and recommend it to strangers. The final scenes are amazing though.

For me it's better yes as it's such easy TV to watch but clever and has lots of hidden stuff that only shows itself 3 or 4 times through. I have both 24 and Soprano's box sets and neither holds my attention like West Wing in fact I have finished neither but West Wing I am on 5th or 6th run through. I type this with Disc 4 of Series 6 playing.

Oh, just fyi, stuff isn't hidden, you are just watching it wrong :p

Aaron Sorkin said:
Television tends to have a very passive relationship with its audience. Television is something you have on to keep you company. It’s something you’ll have on while you’re flipping through a magazine, cooking dinner, talking on the phone, putting the kids to bed. The stuff that I write doesn’t *really work well as background music. You want people to watch it the way they’d watch a movie or a play. HBO’s audience is already conditioned to watch things that way.

How come we in the UK can't produce a TV drama that rivals the Yank's offerings. The Wire and The Sopranos were simply incredible sustained brilliance. Was there ever a substandard episode in the Sopranos across all 6 series? I missed the West Wing so will add it to my list. :)

We can, we can't produce it over so many episodes and so consistently however. There have been some fantastic British series over the years.

Cheers for the reply Housey. I'm a total 24 nut as is the wife, We've watched it through probably 3 times now (but as we start from the beginning each time a new season came out we've seen season one a billion times now it seems like). Just getting through Season 5 at the moment again.

Sounds like west wing is worth a punt.

Another interesting one is Breaking Bad. Quite a different type of tv series, but we loved the first season of that.

Try Rome, that was a BBC/HBO joint venture and it was very good.

The Sopranos definitely had flat spots, as does The West Wing, marred by on set drama and problems. The Wire is the only TV series that is close to as perfect as West Wing that is also consistently good, even more so than the West Wing, it just doesn't have its Aaron Sorkin pure gold moments (season 2 finale etc) which make the West Wing the best thing to ever air.

As we're recommending series (how odd :p), Justified is well worth looking at.

It's fun and Timothy Olyphant is as dreamy as they come, but he is miles better in Deadwood (they stole him/the character he plays in deadwood to sell Justified to the network, and it works) and Justified is not gold standard "Top Tier" TV like most of the shows mentioned in the thread. It is good and it almost gets there, but when you compare it to something as high as West Wing, its clearly not deserving of "Top Tier" status TV.

Completely agree about Timothy Olyphant, he's fantastic.

I was watching it before you were all born so I am Spartacus! I appreciate it only started in the late 90's but I'm making a statement here.

At least it didn't displace Firefly :(
That would be quite a cross to bear :p

I just can't think of any other way to stop people from lying to insurance companies. There also seems to be little shame in doing it as well.

Agreed.
