*** Windows Phone 8: Apollo ***

The features look very nice. I don't really care that I'm not getting W8 just yet and my phone's only 3 months old. I'd much rather they push as hard as they can on improving each round of software and then I get it when my contract runs out, than they gimp everything so that old phones can keep up and ultimately everybody loses out long term.

Apps don't mean that much to me. As long as the key apps like facebook continue to work I don't mind as everything else in the devices works well.

Tbh until they start seriously rivalling Android and iOS in market presence I think they have every right to not waste time making the new OS work on the old hardware as they're not actually letting that many people down.

Plus I have my next contract update just before uni which will be nice :)

Not bad given today was just the developers platform update and didn't feature any of the new hardware, consumer features or services...

I’ve been sitting on a treasure trove of Windows Phone 8 (and other general Windows Phone) information since December 2011. In this knee-jerk, bloggerific world we now live in, that I sometimes don’t instantly publish everything I know about certain topics is perhaps confusing to some people. But I feel very strongly that Windows Phone deserves to not just survive but thrive, and observing that Microsoft and its top smart phone partner Nokia were in the midst of a difficult transition in this time period—treading water with Windows Phone 7.5 while Nokia tried to re-enter the US market by delivering new devices that would soon be orphaned—I decided to hold off.

So he has basically told his audience he is a Microsoft marketing monkey. Fantastic.

Windows Update. Windows Phone 7.8 will be delivered directly to all Windows Phone users, bypassing the carriers. You will be able to download and install Windows Phone 7.8 over Wi-Fi, at home or wherever else, and install this update. This type of updating will be made available in Windows Phone 8, as well, as given my long, loud, and lengthy complaining about the lack of such updating in Windows Phone 7.x, you won’t be surprised, maybe, to discover that Microsoft jokingly calls this “the Paul Thurrott feature” internally.

Sounds like they've done an "Apple" and totally bypassed carriers. This will annoy them A LOT!

Not getting WP8 doesn't really annoy me. Apps written for WP8 not working in WP7 does. An iPhone 3GS is getting (an admittedly bare-bones) iOS6!! But at least basic current app support continues for that over three year old device.

I'm concerned about my 7 month old Nokia lumia 800 and having the app lmarketplace bring abbandoned for the new marketplace, if they dont encourage developers to build fir 7.8 as well, this will be my first and last WP device.
They might try and encourage developers, but given it's now officially a dead end platform, there would have to be some really good reasons to put any effort in to it.
Who I feel for here is Nokia, they've gone all in on WP7 only to have MS tell everyone one that their current products are going to be EOL'd, but it's about 3 months until we'll start to see the new ones, that's bound to have an affect on sales. But then looking at MS's history with mobile partners, this behaviour isn't exactly surprising.
What is surprising though with both this announcement and the Surface one is why they are announcing them all so early? Apple does an announcement and you'll be able to order the product as soon as the keynote is done.

Yes, you will get teh 7.8 update.

Personally im still very VERY Happy with my 800, best phone ive had in a long time, and MORE than happy with teh fact than instead of acting like Win8 was going to update and run they made a seperate effort for other models, and 7.8 gives a HELL of a lot of those features, at least till im ready to get a new Nokia Win8 phone and a RT Tablet.

Considering that the soonest I'll see a Win8 product on teh market, that would have my phone 1 Year old, whioch if you are a geek, its time to be thinking about updating anyways!

What I want to see now, is what Nokia hardware wise beings to teh table, mostly in phone, but they are bound to be making a tablet as well right?

I agree with the above, I have been very happy with the Nokia Lumia and its been one of the best phones I have owned to date.

I am also looking forward to what Nokia is going to bring to the WP8 / Win8 table.

Wow this A LOT of new features. Gotta feel sorry for current WP7 users though but I guess only the 'geeks' will care.

Yeah there are loads of great things coming through but I don't mind. All this hardware will cost and I refuse to spend more than £25 a month on an 18 month contract, so I don't really mind that I'll have to wait 9 months after release to get this stuff :)

I bought the phone knowing Apollo would come and would in all likelihood not be compatible with current WP7 phones. Just because Apollo comes out doesn't mean my Lumia will suddenly start being sluggish, or my experience will get worse. I just might stop seeing apps getting updated so much and that's it; I don't really mind that as I don't use apps that much on my phone, it's mostly camera-facebook-texting. Things that would irritate me would be things like whatsapp pulling WP7 support etc. Stuff like tech moving forward I can live with

I'm currently on WP7 and I'm not too fussed about it being theoreticaly EOL'd. People have to remember that WP7 as an OS was out a fair while before Nokia entered the fray with their phones. Yes it's a bit annoying if you waited for a Nokia phone before taking the plunge into WP7, but in the grand scheme of things they were releasing late into the WP7 OS lifecycle

I have just watched pretty much the whole windows phone 8 summit video on MSDN, all I can say is wow. Microsoft in my opinion have just taken huge step forward n the mobile arena. I m really looking forward to the release of the whole windows 8 ecosystem.

After stepping away from the internet for a bit and mulling it over, this is pretty much how I feel. But with added pessimism :p

My Lumia will get better over the next 6 months. Can't complain about that. First gen device WP7 users have been very well looked after IMO. It's a shame Nokia had to sell and market and big-up Lumia devices irrespective of when they found out they wouldn't be upgradable to WP8. There is a cloud hanging over current WP7 devices but it'll take a while to see if it slowly turns dark over a year+ or suddenly spawns a tornado at the end of this year.

If the apps I use that are very important to me (Amazing Weather, Kindle, Endomondo, Facebook, Nextgen Reader, Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps, Rail Planner and Skype currently) keep getting updates all will be well. If though say the developer of Amazing Weather pretty much abandons WP7 and concentrates on WP8 there's an issue. Even more so with Facebook as their app still hasn't reached (functional!) parity with iOS & Android versions. So my future with WP/Nokia is entirely dependent on app developers. They are the ones that decide if WP7.8 is a nice middle ground for a year until most people are ready to upgrade. Or a slap in the face to current users.

Can't wait, sounds awesome and iOS is really annoying me and android just doesn't work. On Holliday and mate who's well into android phone is just carp and I can't do sod all on ups like upload photos. It's too restricted with file managment and is rubbish with hotel wifi. Give me w8 locked down system but not so locked down I can't do basic stuff.
