Jimmy Carr overcome by grief

really? so someone earning millions a year pays less than 1% tax and you guys are ok with that?

im actually quite shocked.

but he uses no more service than you, probably less he will not need a pension, he probably has private health care, his kids (if he has any) will go to private schools

Please give us your money Jimmy. We need it to buy weapons to fight our illegal wars.

Lolgovernment.

It's funny because it's true!

Someone earning 1 mill and paying 1% would be paying £10k in taxes, more than I do in a year, and I'm going to wager that I make more use of the things the tax is used to pay for than the millionaire does.

If we Jimmy as an example, pretty sure all the people going to see his shows and buy his dvds pay VAT, so he is generating tax income, just not out of his own income.

Swings and roundabouts yo!

I agree with this. He's only one of at least a thousand people who did this. Even if its "morally bankrupt" as the media is claiming, theres no reason he should be made the poster child for Financial Corruption.

And there ARE worse things a person could do than fiddle their taxes a bit. If you must sharpen your pitchforks, aim them at the murderers, child molesters and rapists in society. Their the ones that deserve it.

oddly i thought the police were after the 'murderers, child molesters and rapists in society'. i guess you are right. we really should make a law against such things first ;)

Bloke on Sky News about 18:30 last night was talking sense on this TBH, forget who he was though. General gist of what he was saying was to make a 30% flat tax rate (rich, well everyone, will see it as fair so not resent paying & UK will look attractive), close all these stupid loopholes so that everyone gets and pays their 30%, and save money by sacking half of HMRC as now it's a flat tax their job is dead easy.

Government gets more money in as the rich actually pay their tax. Rich don't resent paying their tax as a flat percentage is fair. UK looks attractive so rich/investors don't need to bother doing the whole Monaco/Luxembourg thing. Government saves money as HMRC is way more efficient.

But it saddens me that you probably will, and will happily sit there taking child benefit, tax credits, and using all of the other wonderful resources paid for by taxes paid by large corporations and high earners whilst teaching your own urchin offspring the same ridiculous values and anti-establishment morals which are only serving to drive this country into a pit of self loathing ineptitude.

Instead of bashing the rich for being better at what they do than you are, why don't you get off your filthy left wing hippy backside, get a wash and start earning some money so you can donate it all to our panoptic welfare system by way of tax.

But we need to punish the successful and the achievers or how can those who don't put any effort into life get any joy?!?!?!?!

Why not just have a truly flat tax where everyone pays the same tax in absolute terms - let's say £20k a year?

Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I think everyone (individuals and companies) should pay the tax they are liable for, without using machiavellian schemes to avoid it. As it is, those with access to fancy accountants and tax experts paying less than they are meant to pay mean the rest of us have to make up the difference.

Maybe I'm unusual in believing in 'society' and responsibility towards the greater community, while so many others just think of what they can get out of it for themselves and stuff everyone else.

+1

as i said im shocked at how many people on here dont think we live in a society and are basically just selfish gits out for their own.

i would like to think that if i had carr's money, not only would i pay my tax (to help the poor, many of which buy his DVDs) but that i would actually be spending additional money to help people and setup foundations etc.

maybe some of us have a better heart than others. or are just nicer people.

i agree that tax money is often poorly spent but that isnt an excuse for rich people to pay less than the rest.

Do you volunteer a lot for charitable organisations? Homeless shelters, salvation army?

the fact is many of us are paying more tax because the super rich pay next to nothing.

How am I paying more tax because the rich pay next to nothing?

I'm not talking about taxes like VAT etc, I'm talking about the tax on my wages. I pay 20% AFAIK, but I'd be interested to know how you calculate I'm paying more because Mr. Carr only pays 1%.

Do you know all the ins and outs of Carr's charitable donations? He may very well do all these things but bot make a big media fuss about it...

The exchequer requires a certain amount of money to spend. If it can't raise that money from X, it has to raise it from Y.

Your 20% rate of tax isn't immutable, you know.

Oh my God, it's full of stars.

oddly when i was using private health care scheme i still had to pay for the NHS. since private care cant do 100% of what the NHS do the rich will always need the NHS.

maybe if i wasnt being tax fleeced too i could afford to send my kid to a private school. maybe we would all be better off if everyone paid there way?

i guess im just odd that i feel part of a society and im a very generous person. maybe i should be more selfish and cutthroat and be a bit more. '**** you im ok'.

i bet that will make the country a much nicer place.

The government has become irrelevant in today's society anyway, they never speak plainly, they always seem to be double standards/backstabbing morons and it takes decades for anything to get established if it doesn't benefit them personally.

Get rid of them all, id rather have corporations running this planet, oh wait they already do :), government simply acts as that pointless middleman to make it seem like we have any say in the affairs of the planet, perhaps if society in Britain wasn't so pathetic and stupid, government would be more relevant to our needs, however this is not the case.

There is nothing interesting about lying to ourselves for years on end, just feel some satisfaction in the term "democracy", when all it ends up being is a sadomasochistic system where we inflict pointless amounts of grief on ourselves for little gain.
