Buy a GTX 670 now?

Hello all

I face a conundrum that doubtless you chaps can solve for me.

My HD4890 is really starting to show its age, so I have been hankering after a GTX 670. However, the main game I am waiting for at the moment is Guild Wars 2. When that will come out is anyone's guess at the moment, but let's say around September for the sake of argument.

Is there anything on the horizon, such a new tech or big price drops, that would make buying a GTX 670 now a bad decision?

Thanks!

O

at the moment the gtx 670 is nothing but a good decision.

or save some money and go for a 7850.

After some reading I am now very much considering getting a 7850 and overclocking.

Any other views on whether this is a bad time to buy considering my circumstances?

Anything over the 7850 is a bad proposition imo, sure they are the latest and greatest but they don't come close in extra performance to price over a 7850.

Besides, you will see a fantastic performance boost just going the overclocked 7850 route.

The only other suggestion would be to wait for the 660 and see what it brings.

After some further reading I think you're right. Just ordered one - very exciting!

I'm in the same position as the OP, at the moment I reckon the options are

1) Rob a bank and buy a GTX 670
2) Be sensible and get a 7850
3) Be boring and wait for a 660 Ti

I think the 660 Ti will probably destroy a 7850 but given the fact its not even released yet (and delays are being rumoured) the 660 has a good few months tech over the 7850.

Which 7850 would you recommend? At the moment I've been considering the MSI as I keep reading about their Twin Frozr coolers being decent.

Yeah the MSI Twin Frozr III is a good one, it's the one I went for due to the positive reviews about their coolers and they've a better RMA service than Sapphire.

stock vs stock the 670 is better value for the performance it gives. sure you can overclock the 7850 but then you can also overclock the 670 (albeit not as much as the 7850)

Do you have any data or a calculation to support this?

Here's a quick calculation I will do with data from AnandTech's bench tool found HERE

Game: Metro 2033
Resolution: 1680x1050 (the lowest of the low)
Quality: High with 16x AF

GTX 670: 103.5 fps @ £300 = £2.90/fps
HD7850: 70.5 fps @ £180 = £2.55/fps

It would be useful to calculate the average across various benchmarks, but would take a bit of work.

Another way to look at it is that the GTX 670 is 66% more expensive than a 7850. So in a given benchmark, to break even and be just as good value, the card needs to be produce 66% higher fps.

Unless anyone has any suggestions as to how best to compare these two cards?

I'll buy whichever, as long as they are worth their price tag.
