Are watches redundant?

My Omega is reserved for occasion wearing, so weddings, parties, special nights out with the wife etc etc.
Why? Why have a decent timepiece and not wear it? It's like people who buy a new car and then only drive it when it's sunny.

I had a couple of expensive timepieces over the years. I realised that I wasnt wearing all of them enough to justify the spend, so narrowed it down to the watches below (not including my older watches, watches I've inherited and dive watches).

I now only have a Ball Engineer Master II World Time that I wear everyday. Its the best watch I've owned; it looks good casual or formal, its the most accurate (of my automatic watches) and its proven to be quite tough.

The other watch I wear is my Casio Protrek. Thats been literally around the world with me and I've taken it from temps of plus 50 to minus 40, including sites where mobile phones are prohibited. It was more than worth the money I paid for it.
I'll never substitute a mobile phone for a watch. Especially in the work place.

A watch is also a fashion accessory :) They look nice and complement a lot of things.

It's much easier to glance at a watch then light up my phone out of my pocket.

Poor people always use this argument.

It's nothing to do with wealth.

I do understand that people use them as jewellery and they are nice don't get me wrong.

However, for me, I just would rather just wear a simple watch to tell the time.

I'm not really a materialistic person, and I don't wear jewellery - I'd rather spend 1000s on going on holiday (which I do several times a year) than on a watch. :)

I think it's great if you can afford one and are happy to wear an expensive item - then good for you.

It's just not for me really.

However, now I have an urge to wear my watch again! :D

Always feels wrong not wearing a watch for me.

Spending serious amounts of money on them is realistically not justifiable on any objective measure but I would still buy an omega if I had the cash!

i used to always wear a watch then stopped for ages and just used my phone. It's such a pain in the ass! Having to scrabble round to pull it out, dropping stuff that's in the same pocket, looking unprofessional in a client meeting, running out of battery or leaving it at home/bag/office are all making me wish i wore one more often.

Getting new straps for my good ones and planning on buying a couple more nice ones and starting to wear them more for sure.

Real men use timepieces anyway.

Timepieces and watches are different. If you're using your watch as a bit of bling then it's an attempt to show off your status and wealth.

Your average casio, timex, sekonda (Argos catalogue collection watches) are all redundant as people now have perfect access to the time in the form of mobiles, ipods, Kindles, Vitas, ipads etc, etc so knowing the time or guessing the time is more accurate in this technological age.
