Things to do round Newcastle / Sunderland

Can't avoid it... I'm working for their city council ;)

I'll have my car with me... so can get a bit out of the area... not wanting to go too far though.

(working in sunderland wed & thurs... then newcastle sat & sun for the overtimez... no real point in driving home thurs night only to drive back up friday)

What sort of activities do you like to do?, do you have access to a car or will be using public transport?

There is numerous museums, greyhound race courses, horse racing at newcastle, High ropes courses at Beamish Wilds (also bird shows) Beamish museam is medelled on old mining museum and for some reason is always freezing even on the sunniest of days. Then there is Durham with its cathedral, The metrocentre in gateshead one of the largest shopping complexs in the world. A lot of cafe bars in the jesmond area of Newcastle and the Quayside part is okay for restaurants. North Shields has a fish market which I enjoyed on my last visit. Sunderland as they say isnt great and im struggling of things to reccomend there.

You might have your car when you get there. Don't count on driving home in it.

Thought of some more, and in sunderland and no regardless what BDEE says it isnt as bad as that, Its at a place called Roker Marina http://www.marineactivitiescentre.co.uk/adventuresunderland/

They do things like canoeing/kayaking/wall climbing etc etc

or since its a friday your free day you could just get smashed like the locals and then have a fight and a kebab seems thats what the rest of them do :-P

Thanks for the info :)

Not even sure what I'm wanting to do up there, it was just more of a general what's available/what's recommended.

I normally end up getting stuck with over-running projects, so usually have to do extra hours to make up for it... meaning I don't really get a chance to explore when I'm jetting all over europe.

Typically... the first time I get a genuinely free day... it's somewhere I've never particularly had the desire to visit - so don't have much knowledge on the area.

... after a colleague just got a paid days holiday in Greece last week thanks to the strikes... argh! :D

Awww, I wholly recommend Smiths Chippy. Best fish and chips round here :)

Should have seen the floods Hedge, there was 1.5ft down Ocean Road. Blocked drains. . . .

Was that recently? I'm from near ocean road myself.

I love smiths chippy too. Much better value than Colemans .

Gills chippy at horsely hill does great fish and chips too surprisingly
