I don't really side with the "grammar nazi" school of thought, even though we are talking about spelling now.

When pretty much any modern browser has spellchecking on as default, why do people ignore it? If I misspell something it gets underlined.

There really isn't any excuse for poor spelling is there?

When I see spelling errors in posts what that says to me is "I don't think the reader of this is worth the effort"

There is a pretty linear relationship between attention to detail while posting and the worthiness of their post.

On another forum, I read one three times and I still couldn't follow it, I wonder if they realised why nobody had replied to their problem :(

But that's different to:

Dis
cuz
no (know)
dat
their/they're/there(More forgivable but still...)
u
y
etc etc.

I'd take your paragraph over one sentence of "dis iz cool cuz it iz lyk awesum" any day.

oh i agree so called "street speak" is just horrible

i dont mind spelling mistakes that are an accident but someone going out of their way to spell words wrong is just ridiculous

I only feel the need to correct people when the inherent meaning is lost or perverted because of poor spelling/grammar. Which can be difficult because then I have to assume what the author meant, which may or may not be anywhere close to what was intended.

Although I do I feel the irrational need to stab people in the gums with a screwdriver when I see 'loose' instead of 'lose'.

My sentiments exactly, i'm far from perfect with grammar / spelling, so i can accept typo's or spelling mistakes but just cringe at any street speak / shortening of words... It makes me think of a 13 year old, and i almost instantly disregard what they're saying..

I don't care if they're dyslexic, foreign or both, 'cuz' is not correct, and i will pick them up on it, if they truly had an excuse like above they'd chalk it down to learning and correct themselves, but people almost never do when you bring it up.

Note: I respect that there are valid causes for poor spelling, but i know a few dyslexics / non English speakers who try particularly hard with their spelling, if they can everyone can.

Spelling really bothers me, as I am pretty good at it - But I don't bother correcting people on here, it's just a total waste of time. I do correct people in emails, or letters and the like, even if they didn't ask me to. :p

/meh, its the internet, the birthplace of what is today referred to as text speak, I couldn't care less about spelling as long as I can understand what the other person is saying.

I too hate bad spelling etc, even though i can misspell with the best of them.
But for someone (and there's plenty on here) to post in a thread purely to correct a posters spelling? GET....A....LIFE!!!!
It may mean you can spell better than them, but it also means you're a pompous anus with nothing better to do. Jog on.
Some people are lazy, sure, some people genuinely cannot spell so well......so what?! None of the nazis on here will be seriously educating anyone by correcting them.
It can be lazy (or forgetful in my case) to not use spell checkers, but if your post can be understood then there is no need for the snobs to jump in and publicly announce your flaws.

Bizarre - that does make it a lot harder to read even though I had no issues with the first one!
