I know I was slower than you two but horrific climbs ?

they were not that bad you should try the team townend challenge next year

http://www.teamtownend.org/

picture the first ryals increase the steepness and extend to double the height and you have newlands valley, extend it six times and you have half of honiston pass the other half is as steep as the second part of the ryals. And Whinlatter is like the one up and out of bellingham but steeper and twice as long.

The only upside to the towend route though is its only 40 miles :)

actually i think i have map my ride of it

now that had some horrific climbs lol I wish i was about 3 stone lighter though im sure these climbs would all be easier !

Pfft...do the Kent Killer with me next year - the name's not a joke :(

Quite happy. Just been out to do my regular 10 mile loop. Knocked another 2 mins off my previous time. Down to 37.55. Nasty headwind on part of the course which has left me wondering how much faster I could have gone.

Most importantly, my climbing has just got better every ride. I'm no Contador, but a massive improvement and I'm really happy. Bodes well for France.

Woo, my neighbour has said he'll lend me his spare Carerra TDF for the Liverpool-Chester ride I'm doing next week! Should be more fun than doing it on my old mountain bike. I've just been trying on his spare SPD shoes. They're a size too small, but they fit OK if I don't do the velcro too tight. I've not ridden with cleats before, so going to go out tonight for a practice.

What combination of chain rings and cassettes are people here running?

I'm thinking of going for a standard double (53/39) with 12-27 but I'm just not sure. I don't expect to do many big hills but it'd be nice to have a versatile range of gears.

50/34 front and 12-25 back. But end up spinning way to much. So also looking at standard double. It is a bit hilly round here though.

53/39 with a 12-25 cassette

How do you find climbing with the 39/25?

I'm leaning towards the standard because having used a compact double (50/34, 12-28) set-up on my now stolen hybrid there was far too much double shuffling for my liking. I want to minimize the amount of front shifting required.

It's not too bad, but i like to grind a low cadence. I'v not come across anything that i cant ride on it yet, but there have been a couple of occasions where i had wished for another sprocket.

that fred whitton look an absolute killer!! not ready for that yet but like the look of the town end 40. not sure if i could convince anyone to go with me though :(

This thread always makes me want to get out on the bike!

Sadly after 30 miles today my chuffing tyre went flat, it's doing it on the rim side, but not in the same place. Looking at it, if I move the rim tape to the side, there are some reasonably sharp looking edges where the spoke holes are, I'm thinking it's them that are wearing through the tube. Such a pain as it was meant to be an 80 miler, but I didn't have a spare tube, and the repair failed after 5 miles. Gutted.

Oh well, taking it back for it's 6 week service tomorrow, he'll have to sort it out.

Try an 11 on the rear. 50/11 is a bigger gear than 53/12.

Honest opinion of Q-Rings? I am seriously thinking about getting them for my Cervelo.

Bit too early to tell. I think I really like them but I can't tell if it's placebo or not.

When I put them on I also fitted new wheels and a longer stem, but I did pull out some PBs according to Strava. Biggest difference seems to be climbing when out of the saddle, but I read someone else say that before I fitted them so I might just be all in the mind.
