Trade in iPhone 4 and pay £169 for Galaxy S3?

Is this a good idea? With the next iPhone possibly being announced soon my one will decrease in value, so the idea of being able to exchange it now for a top of the line Android for £168 (edited, maths fail) is quite attractive. At the moment I could trade it in at CEX for £307 (an exchange voucher) and buy a grade A O2 Galaxy S3 for £475 (i'm on Giffgaff so my SIM will work). Any thoughts? I'm still thinking about following through with this, it's not definite yet, I just thought I'd ask what you guys think!

I wouldn't bother, I switched from an SGS2 having used Android for for a few years to an iPhone 4s and much prefer the Apple user experience. I'd personally just recycle your iPhone with whoever offers the highest rate when the new iPhone is available and you're ready to upgrade.

I have used Android phones before, I have not owned one though. I had a little play with an S3 in a shop the other day, I really quite liked it, will probably go back to have a more in-depth try before I make my decision though.

My gf recently got an iphone 4s, after having a SGS2 for a year, she had a iphone 3gs before and loved it, but i talked her into getting a SGS2 instead of the iphone 4. She now regrets going back to apple and hates the 4s, she's even considering getting rid of the 4s and buying another SGS2.

Hmm that's interesting, for what reasons did she prefer Android? What annoys me about the iPhone is using iTunes to manage everything on it, and also the fact they leave things out of updates for previous phones just to push people to buy the next one. For example, in iOS6, Apple are ditching Google maps for their own maps service, including turn by turn directions and a 3D flyover feature. Except my iPhone 4 won't be able to do the last two, just because it's a 4. It's an attitude i've grown very tired of! Android seems to do things before Apple does it, and even when Apple do implement it it's not always better (notification center).

At least they are still upgrading the 4 - most Android phones get left behind.

This is what i done but originally i sold my iphone4 for the HTC Onex, which then i sold a few weeks later to get the SGS3 instead.

Love the SGS3 but i do miss the simplicity of the iphone, although ill be getting the iphone5 when its out as im due an upgrade later this yr.

But the SGS3 is a worthy upgrade over the iphone4.

Yeh its easy isnt it when you just have the one device to concentrate on. Thats the main problem with Android and will always be a problem, the fragmentation within the Android ecosystem. There are far too many handsets and for many devs its a pain in the backside to make sure that their apps are compatible with the newer devices and older ones.

a lot of apps on my SGS3 just dont look that great or play that great, due to the fact that they havent been updated for the SGS3.

Fragmentation as you describe it, isn't really a big deal to most users though because a lot of the features are still accessible (and so are most apps). If you want fast updates, buy a Nexus device, simples.

Froyo for example, has most features if not all of iO6..

Hmmm, ok then, it's good to know Android has some of the same problems. The major one is iTunes though, I hate it! My inner geek is wanting to tinker more than the iPhone lets me too, and I'm studying Computer Science at University so if I ever end up wanting to develop mobile applications Android is an easier platform to do it on (or so i've heard).

Android is THE tinkerer's platform. If you want to mod your phone, then it is much better than messing around with jailbreaking an iPhone.

Also, has anyone had any experience buying phones from CEX/using their exchange vouchers? I'm not sure whether to trade in my phone for £307 in vouchers then buy a Grade A O2 Galaxy for £475 (so pay £168) or trade in my phone for cash (get £246) and buy a brand new unlocked Galaxy for £500. (pay £254)

OP, do yo have a 4s or a 4?

CPW wanted £300 cash for my 4s 16gb, I would do this and buy an s3 new. (they gave my mate £250 for a 2 year old iphone 4 14gb)

had an iphone since day 1, recently sold my 4s for a Samsung Note and simply love it

ok not as easy to use as a iphone, but screen is immense and loads more features I can tinker with

samsung imo are way ahead of apple, iphone5 needs to be something special for me to go back to them tbh

the sheep who follow the crowd will get an iphone regardless, even if they add one more new feature people will still buy it, Apple has the marketing spot on lol

not a fanboy either way fwiw

I have an iPhone 4, I didn't even know CPW did trade-ins! Thanks :) They offer more than CEX in cash (£250 as you said), so do you think that would be a better option than paying £168 for one at CEX? Would the extra cost justify the fact it's unlocked and brand new?

You'll probably find it's sheep who buy Android phones nowadays and the people who are no longer interested in fiddling around who buy iPhones, I've had all sorts of Android phones, an HTC Tattoo, HTC Apollo, HTC Desire, Galaxy, Galaxy S2 and spent countless hours rooting, installing all manner of roms, themes for roms, (then having to re-odin an official release when it all goes pear-shaped) and it gets boring so I opted for a 4s, no CTD's, good call quality, good network coverage, great apps and I don't look like Count Nerdula carrying around a tablet sized phone in my pocket.

how about, selling phone to CPW for £250 and getting something not as new as an s3, ie, S2, note, nexus etc

that way your not spending mega bucks now and incase you want to jump ship to iphone 5 you can sell without losing too much

Samsung don't hold their prices very well imo, unlike iphones

up to you, if your going to stick with S3, buy new sim free, 2 year warranty and enjoy it!

hehe, there's alway one :)

wasnt a bash at iphone - honest!

Hardware wise, the S3 wipes the floor with the iPhone 4 (except for premium feel/general looks).

Software wise, it's Android vs iOS personal preference. If you like Android, it's worth it. Neither is better, they are different.

It's no good people saying "my girlfriend likes Android more", because that's 100% subjective and doesn't really help you at all.
