£150. Upgrade from a 5850?

VRAM shortage wouldn't cause that. You'd have massive spikes, making the game pretty unplayable.

If you are noticing it dropping form a contant 60 to 58, and this is bothering you, then either you have very very good eyes, or the frame rate monitor you are using isn't revealing the full picture.

This may be a vsync (or monitor refresh) related issue. If you have a 60Hz monitor, you might actually be better off spending your money towards a 120Hz monitor. Many people say their games play a lot smoother - less stuttery without the artificial cap of 60 interfering. Alternatively, an NVidia card with the new adaptive sync technology might help.

Personally in your position, I'd pick up a 120Hz monitor, try it for a week, then if it does't fix it, you know its not a sync issue and can return it under the DSR. If it does fix it, problem solved.

This maybe the road I might go down as I notice screen stutter with both my Nvidia 580 and 6970.

i came from a 5870 to a 7850 and noticed the difference, even more so when i overclocked it,temps are a giggle rarely ive seen it go above 70c and thats overclocked, fan noise is none existant plus only one pci-e cable is needed where i needed 2 for the 5870

Then your looking in the wrong places! They often come up in the MM for around £70-80 ;)

I just had a look in the archive, seems you are right mate and I missed all the bargains.

Am looking to sell mine but will prob. flog on an auction site as lot more idiots likely to pay higher prices than the knowledgeable folks round here. :)

Cheers,

How much of a performance gain would I get from a 5850 to 7859?

A decent amount - especially if you're willing to overclock it. There's a whole thread of help and support for overclocking that card on this forum. I'm sure people will help you if you run into trouble. You really do get unrivalled performance to price ratio if you overclock it.

Worth a shot bud! as there's always a bum to find the seat. :)

Very true, I haven't sold anything on an auction site for a while so will investigate the prices but did sell a few old graphics cards for almost what I paid for them a couple of years back...

Sorry for the thread hijack! :)

Used 7850. They do pop up within the MM every now and then, and once overclocked they are a match for stock GTX580's and 7950's. I sold one myself for £140 a few weeks ago.

I got £73 + postage for my Powercolour 5850 about a month or so ago and they were going for quite a bit less than that in the MM at the time.

I would expect the 6950 to be faster than the 560Ti but I guess it depends on what games you are playing. Both are great cards under £120, anything above start looking for 7950

The situation of 6950 vs GTX560Ti is pretty much the same as 6850 vs GTX460...both win some lose some depended on the game, so generally they are seen as being on par with one another.

I echo the 7850 vote.

However, depending on when the GTX 660's are out that might be worth waiting for. But it will probably be be in the £200 range.

I wouldnt bother with 5850 xfire.

Why are you worrying about micro stutter?

If a game is too demanding and the settings too high, even for a GTX 690 it too will tank.

A 7850 is more poweful than a 6970 or a GTX 570 so it will be a big upgrade for you, and it is more in your budget range.

I just find it so annoying. I want a totally smooth gaming exeprience

You're not going to get that with a single card in this price range. I say get a second 5850 or even 5870 and xfire it if you can (PSU+mobo) if they allow.

If not you can either go for a 7850(£180) as this currently offer best bang for buck in performance.(40-50% overclocked)
