Arsenal currently discussing whether to issue a response to Van Persie statement. Club had no idea this was coming #bbcfootball #afc

Arsenal will release a statement in response to Van Persie comments on their official website shortly #bbcfootball #afc

This should be good.

So hands up who would give the stamp of approval for their club to sign RVP?

I'd take him in a second, him and Rooney up front = drool. Arsenal will never sell to us though.

He's given Arsenal a very good last 18 months and I can totally see 'his' point of view of wanting to look back at his career and have some medals to show for it but it's still not much loyalty shown to The Arsenal who if they were another club would have chopped him in years ago because of his fitness record.
I doubt that, his quality has been there for all to see pretty much since he arrived. A lesser player maybe, but that shows loyalty is only given to players good enough to warrant it. Don't think Franny Jeffers will see Arsenal as a loyal club :p.

If you were RVP and seeing Podolski and Giroud sign for Arsenal, wouldn't you think its clear its time to move on? Wenger wasn't exactly suttle with his new signings. How would they fit into the squad with RVP still there.

Would be interesting to see RVP play for Real Madrid and actually win something and maybe see Benzema or Higuin play in England.

Wenger could try and sort out a swap deal for Benzema, then play three strikers. :p

I can't see this being down to him worrying about losing his place, if anything he's probably sick of looking at the better teams and thinking I might actually be the only player from my club that would have a chance of getting in their team.

Loyalty isn't something that bothers me greatly when it comes to players wanting to stay or leave a football club.

Take Nasri for example, gets a lot of flak from Arsenal fans, personally I don't hold any grudge against him. He put in a great performance against Liverpool last season even though he'd said he wanted to leave, that's what I call loyalty, putting a shift in on the pitch while you are at the club, not whether you have desires to move elsewhere. On the flipside what Anelka did was disgraceful, saying he wasn't coming in to training etc to force a move to Real Madrid.

Players come and go, I don't jizz my pants when they say how much they "love" the club and neither do I want to spit in the face of those who want to leave. I don't even really care what their reasons are, whether it is to win trophies or get a bigger wage packet, that is their perogative. All RvP has said is he won't sign another contract, perfectly within his rights not to sign.

Don't blame him tbh - he's been a good servant to the club.

The message seems very dignified - but then who knows, he probably has a PR team to call upon.

Dunno about everyone else but that is almost word for word what Rooney came out with a couple seasons back?

lolthoughtso, do they have the same agent or something? :p

I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad.

I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract.

I was interested to hear what Sir Alex had to say yesterday and surprised by some of it.

It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.

I have never had anything but complete respect for MUFC. How could I not have done, given its fantastic history and especially the last six years in which I have been lucky to play a part?

For me its all about winning trophies - as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified.

Despite recent difficulties, I know I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. He is a great manager and mentor who has helped and supported me from the day he signed me from Everton when I was only 18.

For Manchester United's sake I wish he could go on forever because he's a one-off and a genius."
In which case all Arsenal have to do is offer him a shedload of money and all will be well with the world again, yes? :p

If it's like the Rooney situation then we can expect RvP to sign a new contract tomorrow. :p

I think RvP's statement is more comprehensive and a bit more damning though, specifically:

"Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward."

So hands up who would give the stamp of approval for their club to sign RVP?

That's a pretty easy question without a putting a price on his head.

Van Persie's an excellent player but I can't see many clubs being interested if the price is much more than £20m.

Club statement - Robin van Persie

Arsenal Football Club has issued the following statement with regard to Robin van Persie's future:

"

We have to respect Robin's decision not to renew his contract. Robin has one year to run on his current contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the Club.

"We are planning with ambition and confidence for next season with Arsenal's best interests in mind."

I think they may as well keep him. He may actually want to stay but just not want to commit himself for the rest of his career.

He will be 29 in August. by the start of the 2013-2014 season, he will be 30. If he goes on a free, so be it. He will be in decline anyway.

Next season could be a big season with the new signings and Wilshere back. They might as well take the risk imo. I think he is professional enough to give his all still, and he may even relish one last season to try and win something as captain.

Tbf that's not a bad shout - if RvP's goals mean them getting into the CL (again) then that by far pays for any 'loss' of his sale value, IIRC the CL is worth about 50 million or thereabouts to a team?

When you think that Drogba has basically called it a day at 34, then whatever contract he signs is likely going to be his last so I can understand him wanting to retire with a few winners medals.

Also is it just me or does it seem an age ago that we were talking about where Hazard was going to end up :p A month is a long time in transfer gossip :p

Be mental to keep him, have to rebuild next year + 0, or have to rebuild this year + £20m, it's a no contest. And if he is the difference between Arsenal finishing 4th or 5th, then they have far bigger problems to worry about and could do with the money even more so. You probably won't have a player score as many goals on his own next season, I bet you make the difference up throughout the team though.

Fair point about if he gets them in the CL then maybe worth taking a hit on the transfer fee but the way I see it:

1) He won't have as good a season again
2) His mind could be elsewhere - come January he can sign a precontract agreement with other clubs so if Arsenal are say languishing just outside the top 4 he could be more interested in being wined and dined by Europe's finest than giving his all for his current team
3) Could cause dressing room unrest
4) Could cause crowd unrest i.e. say he has an offday, how long before the boo-boys come out questioning his commitment?

I suppose one other argument in favour of keeping hold of him is he earns less than £100k/week and to buy a player of equal or better quality we'd need to pay more than that. So CL qualification and savings on wages could come in handy. Also maybe an outside chance that should by some freak occurrence Arsenal win the league/CL this season, maybe he'd change his mind and decide to stay if he thought we'd become competitive.

My advice would be, don't decide to sell him and then see how much we can get, but instead set a minimum price we'd accept (say £20m) and see if anyone is prepared to pay that (if not, then just make use of him for a year).
