20% of school kids malnourished...

How many kids do you know eat 5 a day? Im not surprised at all and wouldnt expect any outcomes from it.

Some kids simply dont want to eat healthily and will kick and fuss to get out of it.

for a lot of people their idea of feeding their kids is a pot noodle and some micro-chips..I dont even think its wilful neglect, its lack of basic intelligence and common sense.

Bad parenting, pure and simple, no excuse for either having no food, or a diet consisting of the wrong food, given the amount of benefits available, if that is happening then you have to look at where the money is being spent i.e. bad parenting.

Yep.

What I find bonkers is that currently, we rely on charities to take up this slack. Different school dinners and free milk (thanks Thatcher) would sort this out cheaply and easily. It would also help school attendances and improve attention whilst there. Successive governments have allowed this to get worse and worse, when there's an obvious and simple solution that has many positive spin offs.

Anyone handing burgers through the school gates gets minced.

Parents spending too much on themselves probably. About time they got their priorities sorted out.

Some pretty stupid comments in this thread, at times like this I'm glad the general public doesn't really have any power.

Do any of you have any statistics to prove the story's you area reading in the Daily Mail/The Sun about people on benefits?, or let me guess - you thing the right wing media is a pillar of honesty regarding the welfare state? (not that the left wing media is on other issues - I thought I'd mention - before a certain cretin feels the need to point it out - irrelevant as it may be to the discussion at hand).

It would be funny if it wasn't so incredibly stupid.

Some cases will be related to poverty, others related to poor parental choices - both need to be addressed individually.

What we don't need is short-sighted draconian ideologically drive changes with no base in reason or our understanding of human behaviour.

That is where parenting comes in, sometimes you need to get your child to do things they don't want to do.

Unfortunately there are a lot of parents who have no idea what they are doing when it comes to food.
Part of my wife's role (community nursery nurse) now includes sessions with parents on healthy cooking (and cooking in general).

A lot of parents really shouldn't be allowed to have children :(

Result! It isn't a decent debate unless we can blame Thatcher for it!

I definitely blame her for snatching my milk.

And for making me an unemployed milk monitor at the tender age of 5. Things could have turned out so differently... :( ;)

And I thought the country was getting more obese...

Malnourishment contributes to obesity. It doesn't mean people aren't eating enough, it means they are not eating a balanced diet.

This is an example of malnourishment.

Teach bullying to the skinny kids so they can steal the fat kids' lunches, everything evens out.

Do people remember the success of Jamie's School Dinners? He made the school canteen serve healthy food, and the pupils all revolted, at least initially.

didn't help when the parents were doing fast food runs and handing them through the school fences, cos there little babies were upset the nasty man was making them eat healthy food, tsk tsk mr oliver

can only help people if they want to be helped, most either don't understand and/or don't care.

as for the need for some people to have 5/6+ children, why ?

People can live very well on benefits, the elderly and those with children have been specifically protected. Complaining about not having enough money to feed your kids is just and excuse for bad parenting or general stupidity tbh.
