Crucial M4 64GB/128GB

What are these ssd's like? Reliability and speed wise? What else do you need to buy to install these in your system?
I currently have a 500gig hdd and really am fancying getting a ssd I use my comp purely for gaming so want to be able to have a bit of space on there after the windows install to get a few games on there also will I see much improvement with games? Or is it more of a operating system bonus?
I'm thinking a 128gb will be to small and am still worried a 256 could limit me but I have the hdd as back I generally only play steam games so can uninstall and install as I please onto the ssd.
I hear there is a write life and delete life on these is this anything to worry about?
Sorry for all the questions any help would be much appreciated.

I'm using one of these (Plextor M2S 256gig) in my Macbook Pro for video editing and it is decent speed for what I use it for (admittedly over SATA2), and so far is reliable although I have only been using it a couple of weeks.
The prices have got even more competitive since I bought it, and would probably get the 256g Samsung 830 if I was buying now.

Then I think I would just be better grabbing a 64GB drive? I do not install many "programs" and I'm also pretty tight for cash atm. 64GB for Windows 7, 128GB for Games and 500GB for Downloads. Should be okay right?

It's definitely possible to survive on just a 64GB drive. I have:

  • Windows 7 64bit
  • 8GB page file
  • Hibernation file
  • 5GB Spotify storage
  • Adobe Creative Suite 6
  • + all my programs (Office, Chrome etc. etc.)

...with about 8GB free.

But 128GB drives really aren't much more for a lot more space... so buying now, I'd go with a 128GB I think.

Is there a reason you would go for the 830 now?
I have seen That the ocz agility 3 248gb is now only £129 on here what's that ssd like?

So from what I read it seems the general opinion is either the m4 or the Samsung 830 series.
Is the Plextor good or?

Im not sure if I could live with a 128gb or do you think it would be okay I only use this machine for games and have a 500gb hdd for storage or is it worth putting the extra to get more space?

agility uses cheaper nand memory, the samsung is only £10-£15 more id choose that

Does this make much of real world difference or is it just less reliable?
I'm not looking for the fastest just want a good all rounder and don't want to spend too much.

have a read through

m4 or samsung would be a very safe choice,if your on a very tight budget maybe the sandisk extreme 240 ssd,3yr warranty for piece of mind

agility uses cheaper asynchronous nand so does corsair force, the m4/force-gt/ocz vertex use superior synchonous nand,samsung/sandisk extreme use toggle nand which is even better

Thankyou for your detailed reply I will read through that link.
Is there a lot of advantage to having your games installed and running on a ssd opposed to a normal hdd.

The sandisk extreme is actually more expensive than the Samsung 830 248gb just had a little look this is the Samsung for laptops is there any difference performance and so on wise between the laptop and desktop versions? As there is a 50 pound difference in the Samsung range being a desktop and 50 pound cheaper being a laptop version!!!

Levels load quick in BF3 for me (I use a M4 128GB as a gaming drive)

Get the notebook version of Samsung 830 as the drives are the same just the package contents vary (I asked the same question)

Is there any additional things I need to buy when purchasing one of these ssd? Like cables drive bay inserts.

I think I'm going to get a 128gb for my operating system and a few games then maybe get another purely for games at a later date as there is no saving between the 128 and 250 bar about 6 quid so would rather try then maybe get another the operating system on a ssd seems to be the most beneficial anyway.

yeah it is more expensive i had a look,

you should have some spare sata cables in your motherboard box if you built your pc but they are cheap anyway, some come with amounting bracket some dont

the samsung drives are the same apart from the bundled accessories ect
