Would you still lower the graphics if you were playing single player, in this or any other game, just out of interest?
For BF 3 even if I had a card more than capable of maxing the game out, yup I would lower the settings to a bit of medium and high instead of ultra.
As for other games, it depends entirely on the game i.e. crysis and crysis 2 I play on max (or as high as I can anyway

), same for mafia 2 and the likes of Batman Arkham city (I know this game has snow falling throughout, which falls rather heavily sometimes, but for me it isn't distracting and IMO is beautifully done, the way it lands on Batman's cape and slowly melts

) and the same for Max Payne 3 etc. as they look outstanding without having all this dust, papers, leaves etc. floating all over the place like in BF 3 as well as looking like someone has smeared grease over your screen

. There are other games that are similar but BF 3 is the only one where it has been an issue in both SP and MP.
Sure it might look more realistic and pretty in some ways, but for me it is annoying.
I guess you could say I am more a fan of "clean" looking graphics.
I always keep the sound setting to max though, nothing better than the sounds of games especially for BF 3, it really immerses you into the game.
I always start playing the game on the highest settings (except for motion blur, can't stand it) and then work my way down to what I think looks the best and to get at least an average of about 40FPS.
When I was a bit younger, I was obsessed with having the game on the highest possible settings for graphics, but now, I couldn't really care less as long as it looks decent enough and runs smoothly, gameplay>graphics
