USA (California) Road Trip Advice

Never said anyone shouldn't go there. I was just making the point that it's not like taking a day trip to the Lake District. People who are used to countryside being completely safe, like Brits, are the most vulnerable as we just don't think of possible consequences.

Drove through the middle of Death Valley. In a Mustang Convertible. With the roof off. I did take precautions though, I got a double sized soda from the gas station in Pahrump.

The big sur is rather good. San Fran to San Dieago. via Carmel, Montrey, Pacific Grove

Big Sur isn't San Fran to San Diego, it's a small portion of the Pacific Coast Highway just south of Monterey and some 300 miles North of Los Angeles, almost 500 miles from San Diego!

This time I won't be on your plane :(

Gutted. Slightly different trip this time. Las Vegas > Death Valley > Salt Lake City > Yellowstone > Colorado > New Mexico > Arizona > Las Vegas. 23 Days of awesomeness. Doing a skydive in Vegas day after we arrive.

I'm doing 3000 miles around Europe instead at the same time so don't feel too bad for me :p

We are thinking of doing that but we need to do East Coast first. When you add up fuel costs though it works out the same. Are you finished with the US?

Absolutely not - I've just been 2 years on the trot so needed somewhere different before I got moaned at for always going to the US :D

You are right though, it's barely any cheaper :(

West Coast > East Coast. Did East last year.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Some people just wouldn't think.

All,

Thanks for the replies, really appreciated.

I'm pleased its promoting debate, its certainly help us see pro's and con's of both options.

Yes, I'd love to blast down the pacific coast highway in a soft top mustang, it would be totally epic. BUT. a soft top mustang won't fit 4 adults and their luggage for 2+ weeks in any form of comfort. Maybe thats one for a more focused Pacific Coast cruise holiday, rather than a cover as much of Cali as we can holiday.

The idea of the RV is appealing for the chance to chill out and BBQ all over the place, and as others have suggested, in a lot of situations we can park up right near where we want to be, and not be stuck in loads of random towns.

I think the plan would be for rental to start and finish in San Fran as, its the one City where it is beyond unfeasible to drive an RV round.

Very true, but 2 cars to park, 2 cars to fuel, 2 cars to hire, 2 cars to drive.... I'm not totally sure we are 'up' for that hassle, but its something to consider.

Edit - we are trying to look for flights for next year in July and August, but it appears none are available to check for prices which is a bit frustrating, are they only available 12 months in advance?

Yea, 12 months in advance.

Unless you cannot possibly avoid it, do not go in July or August. You will pay a fortune more for your flights - perhaps twice as much as going in September. September is a great month to go - much cheaper flights, more bearable weather (Only a fool would stay for a long time in Death Valley in August for example).

Both of my American road trip holidays have cost circa £3k each including flights, accomodation, car hire, fuel and food. Thats for 2 of us.

Just be careful with things like BBQ's. Some places (like NPs) have strict rules on where you can and can't have BBQs and open fires.

You could probably do it for even less easily depending on how you travel and how you sleep.
