what is the difference between the two samsung 256gb drives?

ones say laptop and the other desktop - I resume they're actually exactly the same?and i can use the 'laptop' one in my desk top?

There's no difference with the drives themselves so you can use the notebook version in a desktop.

The only difference is what accessories come with it in the box.

The "desktop" version includes a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket with screws and SATA data & power cables.

The "notebook" version inludes a SATA to USB adapter cable and a mounting spacer so that it fits in the space for 9.5mm thick disks.

Just came here to check the same thing. I've already got my laptop kit, however.

With the rest of my components arriving tomorrow, i'm not going to be able to install the SSD.

What do I need to buy?

Nothing AFAIK, the Zalman Z9 has a 2.5" drive bay for your SSD and the Gigabyte mobo will probably come with at least two SATA cables.

This should be a sticky!!!!

It's been asked and answered at least 7 or 8 times!!! (I know because I asked myself!!! :p)

Current OcUK prices :

256gb Notebook kit - £145.99 :)
256gb Desktop kit - £199.99 :(

So that's £54 for a 2.5"/3.5" bracket and a SATA cable!
(IMHO the SATA/USB adapter in the Notebook kit is more useful anyway, and the SSD fits in my Colossus without a bracket)

Elsewhere, the Basic kit is more expensive than the Notebook kit  so you're paying £20 more for the privelege of NOT having the extras (I think you still get Norton Ghost, but not too sure, it's pants anyway).

Judging from recent prices, Samsung are trying to sell a few of these drives, and I guess they've got more stock of the Notebook variety. But the price differential between kits is crazy, and the naming can be confusing (I originally thought the Notebook/Apple kit was for Mac laptops ONLY).

So just get whatever kit is cheapest, I couldn't be happier with my 256gb for ~£140. People have been running Anvil's endurance test, and these things still run after 2,500TB written - that's 10,000 p/e cycles, or 64+ years at 10GB/day! The only drawback is Samsung's (or is it Seagate's?) terrible customer service, so make sure you get it from a reputable supplier. Or OcUK. :D

Sorry for the bump and strange nature of the question but didn't think it needed it's own thread. Just received one of these drives and the sticker you normally take off to open the box says 'warranty void if removed'. I know they put these stickers on the actual item but am I missing something?

I'm at work so can't check mine.

Don't remove the sticker just cut it along where the box opens to break the seal.
