No it wasn't a joke. Bellamy is not physically capable of playing week in week out. Maxi is. The fact that he's not been picked to play doesn't change the fact that he was available, which Bellamy is quite often not.
As I said, I wouldn't mind keeping Bellamy but if he really is earning £80k per week, that's a lot of money for a player that's not available every week.
edit: and on your Bellamy/Maxi comparison, what matters the most is how they fit into Rodgers plans. Maxi, as Rodgers says himself, 120% fits into how he wants to play. Bellamy less so.
Again I find it funny because for 3 years with a knee problem, he's managed to play week after week for long spells, in fact beyond you bringing up Bellamy every week with "I don't think he'll play as he can't play every week" only to find him start yet another game in a row, I've seen entirely no evidence what so ever that he can't play a lot of games in a row. Meaning if you play Utd, City, Arsenal, Spurs in a row, he's proven himself capable of playing 4 games in a row, if those games came up with a 3 week gap in between, there is no problem, in either situation he's proven himself vastly vastly superior to Maxi in every single aspect of his game and I'd play him ahead of Maxi every single time.
I've never once in the past decade seen Bellamy give less than 100% on the pitch, I can't remember ever seeing Maxi try hard or play well.
Rodgers can say what he wants, managers don't always tell the truth about players, rarely will they bad mouth players openly if they are to be a part of their squad(outside of AVB I've never seen a manager come in and do it straight away, look how that worked out).
In what way could Maxi suit a team in a way that Bellamy can't exactly, in what way does he play that Bellamy isn't capable of? None is the answer, bellamy is better at every single last aspect of the game than Maxi as well as being vastly more effective. Again here's a hint, you don't get good offers or any offers if the manager comes out and says "he doesn't fit into our plans, he's rubbish, we won't play him". Aside from the idea that he fits into his plans, can you explain what it is about the way he plays that will suit Rodgers but Bellamy wouldn't?
For the sake of pointing it out, it's not remotely surprising Bellamy is on 80k a week, infact after being at Newcastle, West Ham and City its surprising its that LOW, and from everything you can find it would seem Maxi is on the same at the least but probably higher, for a guy who plays less, is less good, scores less and assists less, who is utterly anonymous in most games and only good in 3-4 games a season when the rest of the team plays well.
If you want LIverpool to improve, players who can only chip in a goal when the team is so utterly dominating the other side are, basically, useless. Malouda scored 15 in one season, where 13 of them made no difference to the result in games where they won by a 3 to 6 goal margin, in tight games he was non existant. Bellamy is the kind of player who will win you games, Maxi is the kind of player who won't ever make the slightest bit of difference.
