How many times have you dialled 999?

quite a few times tbh.

mostly for debris sitting on the M8 funnily enough the last one was yesterday morning for a dead dog in lane 3 :(
make a point of calling in anything that could cause an accident on the basis of what if it was my wife driving down the road

other than that a few incidents I've spotted and once when my dad passed away

999 for motorway debris....really?!

Homeless guy on street one time sitting with head right forward on road, pool of blood around head, called ambulance and they whisked him away, very quick response. Impressed.

err yes.

few examples, the dead dog, someone sees that and swerves they cause a major pile up. something like a tie down strap, if a lorry goes over it and throws it though your windscreen you would know all about it. I would quite happily report anything that would make need to take evasive action as its quite clearly putting people at risk.

If some motorcyclist comes along & hits a piece of debris that could well be the end of them, not to mention the possible outcome of a laden coach shredding a tire & overturning, because it's ran over something hefty sat in the carrigeway.

Once, was in college and during a break about 5 of us were sitting on the front steps when an old guy got hit by a car driven by a girl talking on the phone, not sure what the outcome was but it looked bad. Air ambulance etc.. and road closed for the day etc.. I made the call as i was the only one with a mobile (this was 2000-2001.)

yes definately, 999 is for Police emergencies debris on a motorway is an emergency in my eyes as it could cause a fatal accident

Also once, when I was 9, there were 6 bins plus the swings on fire at my local park, with trees starting to catch as well

More times than I care to remember.

Once when I was a kid.

Another when my front windows were being put through.
The next night when my rear windows were being put through.
Another while in the midst of a gang intimidation in the street, with objects including full beer cans thrown at my head.
Another when my wife was being assaulted with stones and debris in our driveway after an attempted window-smashing.
Another when our fences were being put through, front and side.
Another when my in-remission cancer-sufferer father-in-law was being assaulted after a 45-minute snowballing attack on our home (not as funny as it may sound).

In none of the above circumstances did the police arrive within anything less than 24 hours. If at all.

Just the once. Was walking to work one morning and heard a loud bang, looked up and two cars had hit one another. No serious injuries but one guy was more than a bit out of it. Felt awful all day though because normally I walk on the other side of the road where one of them ended up on the pavement and into a wall. :o

Regarding motorway debris, just would have assumed there would have been a dedicated Highway Maintenance number?

there is but if its something that poses an imminent threat then its a 999 shot. and with that its pretty much anything in the carriageway. I do understand where your coming in that it may come across as a bit OTT to call 999 for debris but I've seen the consequences of debris being thrown up and or people swerving to avoid debris.

Just the once, I was at a rock club in Hull and had just left and was waiting for my taxi to arrive. A drunk girl was being held on the shoulders of two other people, one of them walked away and she slid off the others shoulder and hit her head on the pavement, bloody everywhere. Called 999 for an ambulance for her, only to find out from her friends that she was 16.... Not good. I had to ask as I was being asked all sorts of questions about her from the 999 folks to inform the ambulance crew. I didn't even know her name.

Once to report a drunk driver (I'd watch them get sent on their way by the police and told not to drive, only for them to come back once the police had gone)

Once to a drunk man who fell flat on his face and knocked himself out. He got up and gave the paramedic a mouth full of abuse once he arrived, so he promptly got back in the car, thanked me for calling and drove off :D

Once when someone smashed the front door down and threatened my mum with a knife for the car keys (fun night that one..)

Once for a diesel spill on the motorway (sideways round a bend at 80mph scared me enough to know it was bad enough to do it).

Used the roadside phones to call in debris on the motorway once too, but only as I'd pulled up next to one. Probably the better option really, they stuck the overhead matrix signs on whilst I was still talking to them, and said someone was on the way.

Once accidentally. Phone at work wasn't responding to key pressses, wanted to dial 9 for an external line... you can guess the rest :o Hung up, but they called back and had to apologise :p
