It's because the heat is not being pulled away from the chip itself. Well, some of it is, but not very much. Largely due to how they have attached the IHS this time around.

Also, apparently, because of the 3 dimensional structure of the new transistors, or some such.

If you flipped the lid and put better TIM on, you the cooler would get warmer due to more heat being able to reach the IHS, and then the cooler itself.

Without flipping the lid, I am pretty sure that the bigger/more efficient coolers ar e a bit of a waste. Is why I sometimes get tempted to go smaller than the Phanteks.
 
Hm thats quite interesting and something I hadn't considered having an effect. I thought the interface they used would have still given a somewhat decent heat transfer even though the TIM is ****.

It's why people are seeing such good results when flipping the lid and applying a good TIM.

Seen reports of anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees.
 
right guys, after years of mac usage i got interested and built a PC this weekend, anyway its a i5 3570K on a Gigabyte Z77-U3DH MB, with samsung green ram.

I seem to have one core #3 which is about 8-10 degrees hotter than the others at idle but it evens out under load, now I've overclocked to 4ghz while running IBT on very high they sit at around 60-65, my cooler is a matterhorn pure with IC Diamond. I was wondering if i had done something wrong with the TIM and this was why my #3 core was getting so hot??
 
Well, let me server as a warning to those who would flip the lid, for just that little bit extra - DON't DO IT.

Don't know what came over me this morning. Maybe it's that I didn't sleep well on sleeping pills, or maybe was just regular stupidity, but thought I would have a go.

Was trying to be very careful, but pushing blade in on one corner, it gave a bit easier than I was anticipating, and landed up pushing blade in far enough and hard enoug that I nicked the chip on one corner.

Result: PC will not even power up.

So not only have I wasted £250, but I will likely end up with a chip that does not clock as well.

Stupid thing to do. Had even decided previously it just wasn't worth it, but this morning, I just had this "Why not" feeling on the matter.

Surprisingly, I am not even really upset. Mostly just a little annoyed that I can't game this weekend.

Maybe I can claim on household accidental damage insurance :D
 
Gutted mate. I tried convincing myself to do it, but I still haven't managed to cross the line yet!

Is it definately damaged and won't post? Can you put a pic up?
 
It's currently back in the socket to protect the pins at least. May take photo later.

I put a i3 2105 in and that was fine, so chip defo stuffed.

It's just a small chip out the corner, but when you are talking micro electronics, a little goes a long way :D

It's great seeing people get good results when doing it, but I guess my case will serve as an indication that it can go wrong....

Need to get off these prozac. Yesterday left phone on train and wasn't really bothered (though did manage to get back eventually due to kindness of others), now today I have killed a chip, and not really very upset....

Unlucky Eyetrip. I can understand how you did this... once you get through the glue it suddenly slides through very easily. At least we all know the risks I just wish Intel would take this issue seriously and change thier processes, its terrible really that we need to take these risks.
 
Been thinking about doing this recently with some liquid pro, this had made me reconsider since I cannot afford to buy a replacement at the mo. I think you should try it if you can afford to buy a replacement.

i feel for you trip :(

On a side note do you IB oc'ers use all the c states? just playing with my set up and have found fixed volts with out c states to be more stable with lower volts.

where i couldnt boot in with anything lest than +0.80 ( equal to 1.40) for 4.7, i am currently priming fixed 1.32v temps in the mid 70's low 80's

That is really bad news.!

Did you not put it into an oven for around 20 mins at 80c first prior to using a blade..?
When I did that it was very easy to remove the lid with very little downward force being needed.

It is a risky business indeed and again I'm sorry that it ended this way for you.

Would you get another..?
