Virgin Media Discussion Thread

those asus routers are an overkill for most people.

The Samsung I linked for 30quid (normally 100quid) earlier and a Dlink 615 10-25quid (can be dd-wrt'd) will be aweseome for most people.

The Asus is being banded like everyone needs one when they really don't - it sounds to me that anything is better than the crappy superhub!

He asked for a "good" router... those are not "good", they're passable but not great.

The Asus routers have hardware NAT, which significantly improves browsing latency - they're "good" and the NT56U is rather cheap... so silly not to buy one if you're shelling out the money anyway...

The 66U is overkill, however.

Anyone know how much of a difference in wireless there is between these two? I want good wireless signal downstairs in my house currently using just the Superhub its in the top right corner of my house atm

If there isn't much difference then i'd get the n56u

Well the 56 has internal antennae, the 66 is external.

I would expect the 66 to be the better of the two, but from what I've heard the 56 is pretty damn good.

For me, the superhub couldn't reach 1 room in my house, anything in the garden or when I was out front in the car.

The 66 can reach all the way to the bottom of the garden & other places too... more than enough for me as it's not a small area to cover :)

Both of them look overkill to me; I have no issues with latancy or anything like that as standard. I don't care much for pings and the like, I just want better download speed (due to better wireless signal) and generally better coverage!

At only £85, the 56U is hardly overkill - that's the price of an average consumer router

What I'm referring to is not just pings in games, the most noticeable difference was simply general web browsing... web pages load in 1/4 of the time they did before.

Plus they have great wireless coverage + the standard firmware allows you to set the output power, so you could increase range even further if you so wished without any modding.

They're rolling it out in weekly stages to people on different tariffs. You'll get it either next week or the one after.

Im on the 60meg tariff (had my speed trebled) so when do 60meg users get the new update?, and do you have to turn the superhub off for it to update or will it do it whilst its on?

After reading this thread, I just turned off my Superhub for 2 minutes, took about 5mins to reboot but it's now on R36. :)

Edit: 96mbps on a speed test now.

60meg connection installed this morning, a lot better than the 2mb connection I was getting with Plusnet!

Shame the Tivo box stopped working about an hour after the installation guy left. :(

The update for 60mb users gets released next week.

I had 60MB installed last week and so far not had an issue with the Superhub apart from a DNS entry not working. Maybe mines broken because its working right :)

Why? New hub coming with it? and what is the word on 200/20? is it still a long way off?

Top tier will be upgraded to 120/12 by the end of the year and then 200/20 is a long way off yet. I cant really say much about new equipment and eta's but all i can say is that VM have plans. And very nice plans too :)

I got my R36 update earlier on today. I noticed some people saying turn your router off for 5 mins to get it, so I tried it and it worked.

I never really had any major issues with Super Hub, the wifi would cr.ap out occasionally (a few times a week at the most) which took a reboot to fix but other than that it's been fine.

The new interface is very nice though, it actually looks like it's a complete product now, the older interface looked like a rushed bad after thought.

I have one issue with it though, I don't seem to be able to find the connection stats that show what speed the line is at.

I just did a quick speed test

R36

the R30 result is cherry picked though, it's the bestest ever result I've had from Speedtest.net.

Here's a pingtest.net one as well
